Couple of mistakes on my first brew

I've already started to look for a burner. I'm pretty sure that my neighbor has one that I could borrow. I may have to pay him with a beer or two but well worth it i think.

    Hot and cold breaks?

Thanks for the info. It seems like there is so much know and learn. It seems very technical, which I think is why I've enjoyed it so much to this point. I know I'm going to stick with extracts for a while so I can concentrate on the basics and develop my process. My first brew is a malt stout...

    Hot and cold breaks?

I started my first beer three days ago and things seem to be going great :) I've definitely have dove into this way more than my wife thought I would and thanks everyone for the excellent advise. I do have a couple general questions though. What are hot and cold breaks? Why are they so...

    Rookie mistake/smell.

I already have. That was my oh crap I need to figure out what to do before this blows up and the wife gets home set up. Fermentation actually slowed down and the air lock is back on.

    Rookie mistake/smell.

I ran into a similar problem. I used the siphon hose from my kit and inserted into the airlock to make the blow off hose. Then I put the end of the hose first into a prego jar, which filled, and then into a milk gallon both with vodka as the sanitizer.

Couple of mistakes on my first brew

I kept a sanitized thermometer in the pot the entire time during the boil. Which in itself let a lot of the steam out while giving the stove a little bit of a boost. I also stirred the pot every ten minutes or so. Would this help with the DMS? I've already thought about using my neighbors...

Couple of mistakes on my first brew

I'm not too worried about it. I know it's going to be a learning experience. My concern is that the water was filtered but it was not boiled which means it wasn't sanitized. That was my concern more so than the temp difference.

Couple of mistakes on my first brew

I was reading some of the threads on here and I ran into a couple of mistakes that I made. My stove isn't the strongest out there by any means so I ended up using a lid for the boil. I used a kit and it didn't say I couldn't use a lid. Why is this a bad thing? Second. I didn't even think about...

First brew and set up a blow off tube

I may just have to go buy a fifth for brewing only because all we have is absolute and that will get expensive quick. Thanks for all of the help.

First brew and set up a blow off tube

Its a narrow tube. Had to make due with what I had. I'll switch to vodka. If I do get suck back atleast it will add to the ABV right :cross:

First brew and set up a blow off tube

What are the chances of getting suck back? I read that a couple of times when I was looking at what to do? I dont really have time to go to the home brew store, its kind of far.

First brew and set up a blow off tube

So I started my first home brew last night. Everything went well. This morning when I woke up the krausen was rising and I was extremely happy. So about an hour ago krausen got into the airlock and I immediately got on here to see what I should do, mainly because my wife would kill me if I...
