Need help with my brewing book

Here are the answers: First name: Karch Location (city, state or province, country): Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Year you started homebrewing: January 2015 What made you get started: Had an interest in the hobby, but never bit the bullet. Received a 1 gallon kit for Christmas and it got the...

Show us your Mead in a photo!!!

How the heck do you get your fruit in and out? Looks like you have apple quarters stuffed into that one gallon jug.

    Show Us Your Label

Depends on what kind of image style you're going for... I like the minimalist simplicity of it. If I was doing it, I'd make the font pop a little more with an outline or color change. But that's just my opinion.

Post your "whoops" moments- messes, etc

Dumbest mistake: Tried making 2 gallons of peach cider in a two gallon fermentation bucket. I should've known it was gonna be an issue when added the peaches to the sugar/nutrient/water in the bucket and splashed a bunch of it out. Totally blanked on that one. Messiest mistake: First all...

    Leaving hops in fermenter?

Have you done extracts before? I only have experience with one partial boil extract kit and I thought the beer turned out a lot more bitter than I expected.

What are 10 American beers I should try buying in USA at a beer shop?

There's a few factors at play: - Depends on what kind of beer you enjoy drinking - What kind of bottle shop/ beer store you're going to (I'm not sure how they do it in Boston) - The distribution area of whatever kind of beer your looking for. For example, Russian River makes some pretty good...

    First BIAB/AG recipe and brewday

I was actually thinking about that. Trying to visualize if the fridge in my garage will be able to hold a 5 gall carboy. I'll take some measurements next time I get a chance.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Gave the brown sugar version a shot over the weekend. Used 6 gallons of apple juice, 2.4 pounds of light brown sugar, and a pack of montrachet yeast. I like the thought of oaking it. Maybe I'll split the batch at some point down the road and give it a try.

    First BIAB/AG recipe and brewday

I transferred this into a secondary yesterday to help clear it up (still pretty hazey) and dry hop it. It fermented down to 1.01 giving it an abv of 7.35%. It tasted really good, more citrusy and floral than I was expecting. I'll pull out the hops in a couple of days and let it settle some...

Citra has a very strong, interesting flavor. If you can, seek out New Belgium's Citradelic beer.

    First BIAB/AG recipe and brewday

Yeah, I didn't filter it at all. Everything the pick up tube sucked up, went into the fermenter. I mainly use hop pellets and saw a lot of the in-kettle filters don't work too well with pellets as they get clogged. I'm going to look into using a cheese cloth or muslin cloth to filter out the...

    First BIAB/AG recipe and brewday

I ended up brewing this beer this past weekend. It turned out pretty good for my first AG, but I think I may have overshot my efficiency by getting higher than expected OG. Pre-boil SG: 1.052 Measured OG: 1.066 My estimated OG according to beersmith was 1.062. Is that an issue? Should...

Anyone have an Anvil burner yet?

I bought an anvil burner from a LHBS about two weeks ago. I used it for the first time today. I use a spike brewing 15 gallon kettle for BIAB. I'm really happy with the anvil results. Heated up 8.5 gallons of <65F water to my striking temp (161F) in less than 30 mins, and then brought my...

    First BIAB/AG recipe and brewday

I think that's what I'll do. I'll start off with no sparge and see where my efficiency is then make adjustments off of that.
