    Belhaven brewery bottles

Hummm, I just wonder why someone would want to reuse a bottle that a pro brewery wouldn't (isn't allowed to?) reuse. My concern is that I am not seeing the whole picture.

    Belhaven brewery bottles

Sorry for responding slowly. I have a lot of bottles and want to throw some out but keep the "better" ones... so I am just trying to understand why there needs to be two classes of bottles if they are all "reuseable". I recall seeing the phrase "brewed (or manufactured) and bottled in..."...

Pure maltose - How can I best use it?

Bought a pound of maltose the other day, thinking it might taste malty... big mistake. the only thing it seems to have in common with DME is its stickiness. What is the best or most interesting way one might use maltose and why would it be better than another sugar?

    Belhaven brewery bottles

Does anyone know if the Belhaven brewery bottles are officially "reuseable"? I see they are deposite bottles, but that may or may not indicate much. There is also an double arrow; not sure if it is for recycle or reuse though. Confusing... looks like made in Scottland but possibly bottled...

    Non-refillable bottles ?

Its OK. I just noticed I was getting lax and started keeping various bottle types around and had begun using them for test brews... not my more "established" beers; but then I realised they were working ok... suddenly, One Day, I began using vinegar bottles which have a beer (crown cap) head on...

    Non-refillable bottles ?

Yea, the ones I have been using are 500ml and range from 260 something grams to maybe a bit more... but I guess I am looking for a more technical answer...perhaps there is a standard (ISO, JIS, DIN) that is used to define the different bottle grades?

CHEM Quizz: How many L. O2 in 5 Gal batch?

Thanks for responding guys. xico, I had not thought about the Germans; are you sure they don't oxygenate? It certainly isn't in the list of 3 now 4 ingredients but I doubt they totally forego it. Somehow I suspect they get it in there. Not really sure though, perhaps someone will post something...

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your comments and images.

    Hop seeds in my cones?

Thanks NB. I am just curious who's visiting my girls! One new find... after becomming specifically interested in the possibility that there might be more seeds in my garden, I checked a few other plants and found a single well formed seed in an Ultra cone. Ultra is said to be triploid...

    Hop seeds in my cones?

Thank you both, B-Hoppy and Northern brewer. B-Hoppy - Have you found the light cream colored seeds just viable as the darker colored ones? Northern Brewer - I had totally forgotten about H. lupulus var. cordifolius thinking it was somewhere else in asia. Do you know how they can be...

    Hop seeds in my cones?

Interesting. So my "seeds" could be unfertile crosss between lupulus and japonicus. There is certainly a lot more japonicus than lupulus here... including several males bigger than the lupulus females. The only other curious thing is that so far, I have only discovered seeds in the cascade...

    Hop seeds in my cones?

PapaBearJay, Yes. But what about the white elephant in the room? Could some of the "seeds" we find be little more than large ovules and not actually true seeds? Store bought chicken eggs are unfertilized but look pretty much the same as fertilized ones. Could we be seeing the same sort of...

    Home brewing in Japan

my 2 cents... I think the more Japanese politicians see the American model, taste the beers and how good it is for the economy... they may want the same for Japan. Homebrewing even in the US is rather a recent thing, and Japan has been moving in generally the right direction... until then -...

    Hop seeds in my cones?

YEH! I have found some seeds in my Cascade cones and wonder if anyone reading this knows if hop plants will produce "seeds" without being pollinated? If I am not mistaken, correct me if I am wrong, but cannabis does. If the seeds in these cones are like the eggs from chickens which have never...

    Home brewing in Japan

Can you site your source for their official policy? Obviously, by selling, one gives the police an easy way to obtain samples for testing. In the absence of samples, the police would probably have to unlawfully take your beer in order to test it to find out if it were illegally strong, so...

CHEM Quizz: How many L. O2 in 5 Gal batch?

Curious how much O2 (either in g or L.) is on average, required to get oh, say 10 ppm O2 into wort. Naturally it will depend on temp., the stone's pore size, losses through escape & probaply more, but what ballpark figure is required to actually get 8 or 10 ppm O2 into a wort? What is the...

    Home brewing in Japan

While I agree overall, I don't like those 4 words above... never second guess those whose job it is to control society and have the right and wherewithall to screw with your freedoms. Better not to test their resolve.

Easy Stove-Top Pasteurizing - With Pics

I like the concept of having the lid on while doing this! I feel compelled to remind people not to look straight down upon the tops of hot bottles full of carbonation under pressure - especially when you do not know how much pressure and what internal temperature is reaching... if the bottle is...
