    Hydrometer issues

Dissolved co2 in the fermenting beer will give you a higher SG also. You need to degas the beer some and retest. I usually let the hydrometer test tube sit for an hour or two at room temperature to let the sample off gas. The SG usually drops 2 to 4 points after the wait.

Mash Tun for 15 Gallon Brewery

A friend of mine routinely does 20 gallon brews using a 120 qt cooler. It is just a matter of getting the height right so that you empty the grain 5 gallons at time after the mash so that you aren't picking up the full cooler. Good luck. Sounds like an interesting build.

Duda Diesel - 30 Plate Chiller

Put a copper coil in a bucket or cooler full of ice. Run the cooling water through the coil before it gets to the plate chiller. I used to live in south Texas and that is what I had to do most of the year to get my wort down to about 70F.

Duda Diesel - 30 Plate Chiller

+1 That is what I use also. Works great. Cold break doesn't clog my chiller but I don't recirc back to the BK. I go straight into the fermenters.

Duda Diesel - 30 Plate Chiller

I bought my Christmas present from Brewhardware: B3-23A-30ST long plate chiller with camlocks. Works great!! Chills 10 gallons of wort from boiling to 60F in about 10 minutes. Ground water temp is currently 53F high in SW Ohio. I flush 180-190F water through the chiller about 15 minutes...

How To: Ranco Two Stage ETC Wiring Instructions

Here is a Pix of my take. I also wired in a duplex outlet, but you only need to break the tab on the power (black wire) side.

    is this a decent refractometer?

A rough conversion from brix to specific gravity is to multiply the brix by 4 then add 1000 and then divide by 1000. For example, if brix = 16, then 16 x 4 = 64, add 1000 = 1064, then divide by 1000 = 1.064. Also, I calibrate my refractometer to my hydrometer by taking one or two comparison...

Home Super Brewery Build: Hybrid Electric/Gas 3BBL Build

I epoxied my three car garage floor right after I bought the house. The garage floor was 11 years old at the time. Cleaned the floor very well per the instructions. Used the Rustoleum brand kit found at Lowes. One kit will do a single car garage and costs ~$65. I did it myself and it took...

    Johnson Controls A19 Calibration

I have used these controllers for years and never figured out how to calibrate the dial. I just used an independent thermometer to measure the ambient temperature of my fridge/freezer and set the dial to achieve the desired ambient temp.

Weirdness when using a flask to make a yeast starter

We have been using Fermcap for the last two starters and that has solved the boil over problem. We also stepped up to a 5L flask so we can make a large starter at one time. We have had two very successful brews using this method of making our starters.:)

How much PBW do you use to soak a 5 gallon Carboy?

I have always used a tbsp per five gallons in hot water. Let soak for 30 minutes and then usually just needed a light brushing with the carboy brush to clean any really stuck on fermentation debris. Maybe the higher concentration will clean with no brushing.:)

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

Also, you can have the ground wire going to the neutral tab. There should be a separate lug on the outlet for the green ground wire.

Ohio Johnson Controls Analog Temperature Controller

I replaced it with a dual stage STC-1000 based controller so I could have two different beers fermenting in my fermentation chamber. This controller works very well and will control the temperature to within 2F of the set temperature. However, as BLGolfer72 stated, you need to verify the...

Ohio Johnson Controls Analog Temperature Controller

I used it as an external thermostat to control an ice cream freezer at beer serving temperatures. I also used it to control a refrigerator at beer fermentation temperatures - 50F to 70F.

Ohio Johnson Controls Analog Temperature Controller

Several years old, but was working yesterday when I took it out of service. The temperature setting is accurate to within approximately 5F. I always use an independent thermometer to check my controllers, whether digital or analog.
