    Deep frying turkeys

Thank you. I know how to not burn myself up, I sure didn't know the rest of this!

    Deep frying turkeys

Just a reminder if you are going to deep fry a turkey on a gas burner: TURN OFF THE FLAME before you lower the turkey into the hot oil! Then relight the burner when the foaming oil settles down. Stay safe and have a great Thanksgiving!

Oh yes, absolutely. Everything needs to be age appropriate. But I always try to remember that we aren't raising children. Children are the raw material, we're raising women and men.

Raising girls is tough. They need to know that they are the most precious thing in the universe, the source of life itself. At the same time, they must learn to be functioning, self-supporting, self-asserting, productive adults. Pride and self-respect, without vanity or entitlement. Tough.

"A point in every direction is the same as no point at all." We raised our daughters on a diet of The Point, Eric the Viking, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Bill Plympton's The Tune, etc. We have weird ideas as to humor, I suppose. No Disney princesses in this family.

I've seen something like that before. Check out Ernie Kovacks' 'Nairobi Trio'. Yep, I'm that old. If anyone is offended, I'm sorry. Things were different then, I can't change history. Kovacks was another genius who passed way too soon.

It's also the background of Sir Terry Pratchet's Discworld stories. That's Great Atuin, the space turtle. The only creature in the universe who knows exactly where she is going.

Pratchett's books started out as a protest or satire of that kind of fantasy series. Finished up with nearly fifty Discworld books, over 80 million in print before he died. You can read most any of them in any order, so not exactly a series. If you haven't realized, I'm a fan.

Had an immigrant Asian neighbor, a refugee from a really stupid war. Very nice family. Their house, and three walls of the garage, were painted a sunny yellow. The fourth garage wall, facing the garden, was a pale sky blue. Every so often I'd hear a wooden sort of thud. Then one day I saw...

What book is on your nightstand? Readers!

Great book! There's a second volume, called, oddly enough, "More Lies My Teacher Told Me." Look in to how text books are selected to understand why our school books were, and are, so bad.
