    Blonde Ale Bombshell Blonde Ale

How about replacing the Saaz hops with an equal amount of cascade?

Splitting partial boil batch into 2 primaries?

Yeah I could see the point in doing that. But am I wrong to think that if there was unequal mixing, and one bottle had a higher strength, it would be taken care of when I blend the two on bottling day?

Splitting partial boil batch into 2 primaries?

When it reaches spring/summer temps I'll be forced to use some kind of temperature control for fermenting. I'd like to continue brewing 5 gallon batches but the mini fridge I have as a fermentation chamber will only fit two 3 gallon better bottles due to their square footprint. Would i have any...

    Blood Orange Coriander APA

Good idea. Maybe I'll try this with one of those small scoop strainers with the handle while the wort cools. Should help at least some. I peeled my oranges with a knife to get bigger pieces, then used a grater to scrape off the white (pith). I liked this method because I lost less material in...

    Blood Orange Coriander APA

I brewed my 2.5 gal batch of this today. I didn't have enough oranges to get more than about .8 oz of zest, so that flavor will be on the very light side if there at all. Holy hell, the trub/hops/orange clogged my funnel strainer twice so I ended up just siphoning it all into the primary. I...

    Blood Orange Coriander APA

Any reason in particular you are not dry hopping? I'll probably skip it too if the orange aroma isn't very strong. Do you think I should add the orange juice along with the blood orange zest? Or just one or the other? I'll update ya on how it goes.

    Blood Orange Coriander APA

I'd like to try this as my first AG attempt but in a 2.5 gallon batch. I have a couple questions. Should I scale back the orange peel and coriander the same as the grains/hops? Having never used peel/coriander, do you buy the peel(oranges)/corriander from the grocery store, or prepackaged at...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

I'm on my second brew and can vouch for this thread. The first brew was so crazy it required a blow-off tube within the first 8 hours. I was really freaking out when my second brew was showing no signs of fermentation after 16 hours, especially when people mention how strong/fast US-05 is. Low...

    Slightly worried about my IPA

I'm about to start basically the same kit and I'm curious, why do they have you add the DME so late in the boil?

    Plastic stir spoon smell

I think its odd that most stir spoons I see online are made of plastic. What is the standard preference on these forums?

    Plastic stir spoon smell

Well I get what you're saying. I didn't notice the water smelling different at all. Solid logic. I think I'll do that.

    Plastic stir spoon smell

I'm a new homebrewer and inherited some of my equipment from a friend. I've been using a plastic stir spoon that has Fermenthaus stamped on it, looks like this http://www.midwestsupplies.com/24-stirring-spoon-plastic.html One thing I noticed while boiling just water and removing the spoon from...

Brewers Best Hopnog 2012 hop modification

Has anyone made this years Hopnog kit from Brewers Best? I was looking at my kit and it includes a palisade/calypso hop addition at 20 minutes. I've noticed the overall lack of popularity of these hops, would it be wise to just swap them with an equal amount of a different hop, columbus for...

Should I compensate for boil off? Also, how to get steady mash temps?

Does water ratio matter when there are no base malts involved? For example my next kit has me add the 1lb of caramel/carapils to the full boil volume. Whereas, my last kit was very specific about the water ratio when the steeping (I guess partial mashing at this point) involved 2-row malt.

Should I compensate for boil off? Also, how to get steady mash temps?

This makes total sense. The way I've read people explain (in few words) I thought people were leaving their ovens turned on. Not to mention, I didn't take water capacity and temp change rate into consideration. As far as my pot not fitting, could I just use a different smaller pot for my...

Should I compensate for boil off? Also, how to get steady mash temps?

I've read about the oven trick. I saw two problems. The first is my brewpot will not fit and second, I'd like to mash lower than 170. Another strategy I might try next time is to start my mash water volume a bit lower, and when my temps start to creep up slowly add fresh ice cold water to bring...

Should I compensate for boil off? Also, how to get steady mash temps?

I'm extract brewing and my kit instructions have said to start the boil with 2.5 gallons, chill and top up with another 2.5 in the fermenter. With the goal of a 5 gallon batch, should I most likely be adding more than 2.5 gallons to compensate for boil off? Or does the kit assume this and the...

has anyone tried the brewers best oatmeal stout kit

I took two readings over two days with no gravity change. FG came out to be 1.021. I think the instructions estimate an OG of around 1.060 so that leaves me with a 5.1% ABV. Not great but I'll take it. The beer tastes pretty good and is carbing in the keg now. It could be a bit dryer but I'm not...

    Higher quality picnic tap

I'd love to but wouldn't this require drilling holes into a fridge or collar of some sort? Right now that isn't an option. Are there any other mounting options for those things?

    Higher quality picnic tap

I discovered that my brand new picnic tap is very touchy and will spray beer with the slightest pressure on the handle. Not to mention, when I set my keg pressure to anything above 15 psi I'll come back to a nice beer puddle a couple hours later. I know that I can reassemble it, or buy a...
