    Deschutes Hop Henge Imperial IPA

Different strokes I guess.. I love the hop henge, especially on tap at their brewery in pdx. Just had a bomber of it last night, and it was great. The Abyss was great this year as well, have a few bombers in the cellar. I'm not really a fan of black butte, but anyone try the Black Butte XXI...

    Bottling bigger beers

Thanks for the replies everyone. You put my mind at ease. It was only in the primary for 8 days and has been in the secondary for 4 days. I'll probably give it another 2 wks or so before bottling. I knew the us05 was a workhorse, but didn't know it was that hearty. Thanks again everyone.

    Bottling bigger beers

I brewed an imperial brown ale that kind of toes the line with a barleywine. Primary fermentation is done and it's sitting in the secondary. It started at 1.086 and got down to 1.017 giving 8.9% ABV and 80% AA. I used 2 packets of safale us05. My question is this: since I racked to a...

    Black ale question

I brewed a (kind of) schwarzbier about a week ago. It's not cold enough to lager here yet and I don't have temperature control so I used white labs WLP029 and fermented as usual. Should I let it sit in the primary for a few more weeks as I would with a lager, or do I treat it as an ale, since...

    Brewery names--what's your story?

I wanted something science-y, and I liked the alliteration, hence Rigid Rotor Brewing. A lot of people use dogs, lakes, and such for names, (not that there's anything wrong with that, I might brew a "40 pound pug Ale" after my mother's fat pug) I wanted something different.

    Good micro brew chalk board

    That's awesome.

    First Belgian

Not really, though I guess I should take advantage. I have a hard enough time keeping up with all the good beer and coffee around as it is, throw wine in the mix and I'll never get any work done!

    First Belgian

Yeah, no kidding. That's one of the bigger 32 oz. containers too. But I thought ahead and put the container in a big pot before I left for the weekend. Glad I did.

    First Belgian

I brewed a belgian dark strong ale after work on friday and pitched a yeast starter of white labs 1054 (rochefort) at around midnight. This is the first time I made a starter so wasn't sure I did everything right. The next morning at ~8 am, very little signs of activity. I went to seattle as...

    thrown stir bar!!

Someone never took chemistry lab. This is a really common problem. My students crank the stir rate and wonder why the stir bar just broke through an erlenmyer.

So hops are fatal for dogs, what about other household pets?

We drive back and forth between eugene and seattle routinely, and the cat's not so good in the car. The vet gave us a natural tranquilizer, main ingredient: humulus lupus.

Long time since I made an IPA

+1 on the 05. I love the stuff. Recipe looks good. Any dry hopping?

    Czech $aaz

Went to the LHBS today and found a cooler full of hops. We talked (over a glass of awesome schwarzbier brewed on premises) about the shortage and it seem czech saaz are the most expensive, fetching over $3/oz. Luckily cascade is still the cheapest. What is the most expensive hop people have...

    Brewery names--what's your story?

I went with "Whiteaker Arms Brewing." I live in the whiteaker neighborhood in eugene, OR and my damned hippie roommate keeps letting people crash at our place while passing through town. At one point we had a bum living in my roommate's VW van in the driveway and a new orleans refugee couple...

    Your first Brew

Mine was kit from my LHBS, the home fermenter center in eugene, it was an IIPA using steeped grains, lots of whole hops, and extract. It would've been fine but I let the extract (not the canned sort) sit for too long before I brewed and the beer was sour. mental note: old ingredients = sour beer.

    Belgian Dark Strong Ale critique

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll definitely take the orange peel out, and make a starter. I'll try the temp ramp up. I'm too paranoid to open a fermenter mid-cycle. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Belgian Dark Strong Ale critique

This is my first foray into the wonders of Belgian beers. After drinking a piraat last night I'm forced to try my hand at a malt monster. This is my first try, so am not too familiar with the style. Am I performing any sacriledge here?

    Name Your Favorite Overhopped IPA

It's a toss up between Alesmith IPA and Ninkasi Tricerahops. After moving to the pacific NW my definition of 'hoppy' has been drastically altered. I used to think victory's hop devil and hop wallop were bold.
