    first bottle

You'll probably be OK. Maybe some oxidation. Whether or not you get an infection depends a lot on the air quality and air flow where you bottled and are storing the bottles.

Rookie - brewing for first time this evening

Make sure you pitch enough yeast. One White Labs vial or Wyeast smack pack is never enough to properly ferment a 5 gallon batch, unless your OG is around 1.025.

    oxyclean and starsan react?

If you're just trying to get the labels off there's no need for star san. A hot solution of oxiclean will tear through the glue holding the labels on like a hot knife through butter. It will also rip through any organic matter still inside the bottles.

    oxyclean and starsan react?

Other people have already answered, but I'll reiterate. I'm a chemist and teach this to college freshman in their first lab series, Acid + Base -> Salt + Water. Here you've mixed Star San (acid) and Oxiclean (basic) and have made an insoluble salt and water. This is a neutralization reaction...

All of my beers lack Flavor!

You can make flavorful beer with just about any water, even Seattle's. My first thought would be to ask about your mashing and fermentation temperatures. Give me 10 lbs. of pale malt, a few ounces of hops, and a few billion yeast cells and I can make both a flavorful beer or a bland one with...

    Calypso hops?

For anyone in the Seattle area Fremont brewing will be releasing an Imperial IPA that features Calypso and Bravo hops. Since Bravo are a primarily bittering variety I'm guessing Calypso will make up the bulk of the hop flavor and aroma. I'm definitely going to check it out and report back.

    Leaving Oats in Primary

Agreed, or at least not listening to anything they tell him ever again.

    Best US 2-Row?

I would stay away from Breiss. I prefer Rahr over GW, as I get better yields and perceived flavor with the former. Additionally GW is owned by ConAgra. I know some people's buying habits are not motivated by a particular company's business practices, but mine are, and given the choice I'd...

    120L no raisin flavor

That's a lot of C120, and it seems odd you aren't perceiving any of its characteristics. I can easily detect about 0.5 lb. of C120 in a beer with nearly 20 lb. of grain. Perhaps the bin was mislabeled or what you are tasting isn't matching your preconceived notion of what other people call...

Any of you ever met a hop you didn't like?

I'm with you on this one. I think I remember reading an interview with Jamie from Ninkasi wherein he said he hated columbus and they should just never be used. But their Maiden the Shade uses a lot of columbus so never say never, right?

    Hello from Southern NJ!

Hello and welcome to the forums. I lived in SJ for 23 years, but now live in Seattle. I don't know what area you're in but be sure to check out Tap-it in Egg Harbor City, or if you're closer to philly there's Barry's Homebrew run by my friend, Nick. Also be on the lookout for Pinelands...

    Hello from Seattle!

Hello from Ravenna/Wedgewood neighborhood. You don't need much more storage space to go AG. Really just enough to store the mash tun. When not in use you can keep a lot of your stuff in the cooler too. You have a few great options for a LHBS depending on what part of the city you're in.

    Calypso hops?

Like smagee said, probably not a lot of flavor or aroma for a RIS, and I'm not sure I'd even like it very much. In addition to the pale ale, I made a cream ale with a small bittering and only one late addition of calypso and thought it was a great lawnmower beer with a moderate aroma. I think...

    Calypso hops?

I kegged the calypso APA a few days ago. It's still clearing up, but here are a few observations. My OG was 1.052 and it finished at 1.006 using US05. I fermented on the cooler side to keep ester production low. The hop-attributed aroma is moderate pome fruits (apple, pear, quince,...) and...

    Calypso hops?

Brewed a single-hop calypso APA on sunday. The apple/pear aroma descriptor is spot on for the raw hops. I'm curious to see how it turns out after fermentation. I'll post the results when it's done. Here's the recipe I use for all my single-hop brews when I want to learn about a specific...

    BeerKeep App Beta for Android

I've been using this lately for tasting notes and really dig it. It's a really handy tool for reviewing beers. As others have mentioned the ability to interface with BA/ratebeer would be awesome. Other than that I've found the beer list pretty extensive and useful. Maybe a preformatted text...

    Brewcraft Hop source

I'm not buying Saaz, I was just using that as an example of a hop that I don't have a lot of in my freezer and that I would only use rarely, so that buying in bulk doesn't seem like a good option. Consider casdade instead. While I have a pound on hand, imagine I didn't have any and needed some...

    Brewcraft Hop source

Yes, I have several pounds of hops in the freezer from Puterbaugh farms. But it doesn't really seem reasonable to me to buy a pound of, say, saaz if I only use an ounce or two every six months to a year.

I need help deciding on my 1st batch.

what part of NJ are you in? If you're anywhere near philly I know a great one.

    Brewcraft Hop source

Does anyone know where Brewcraft (the company not the store in SF) gets their hops? My closest LHBS sells brewcraft hops exclusively, while others in the area get theirs from hop union. I'm in seattle so it doesn't make sense to buy hops that start out in yakima, then get shipped all over the...
