    Nugget hops in Texas?

We ship a lot of the following to Texas - Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Sterling, and Columbus. Nugget is one tough plant and might work - but it has larger leaves than most; so sun scorch might be an issue unless you site it in partial sun. We have shipped them to Texas and New Mexico, but...

Just got my hops starters yesterday!

You'll have more luck with rooting Early Spring stems. In the Fall, the stems are all Floral initiated - It is like trying to root a vase of roses - ain't gonna happen . . .;) If you mother plants are conditioned properly, you don't really need rooting hormone. They should start rooting within...

    Native Hops to North Dakota

The Hop variety that is native to most of the Northern Tier States is Brewers Gold. It has been crossed and backcrossed to create most of the American Ale Types. Cascade, Centennial, Northern Brewer all have it's genetics. Native plants collected by the USDA from the Nothern States all have...

    I want to grow hops!

Hop lighting is a pretty common practice with hop growers in latitudes near the equator. They don't use high intensity - regular light bulbs are spaced out down the rows - it kinda resembles a christmas tree lot at night. They only are trying to trigger the photosynthesis response and create a...

    Mobile Hops

Growing hops in a container will work for the first year or so- as long as your container is big enough- should hold at least 3 cuft of soil or you'll be watering twice a day :) It's kinda like trying to keep a pony in an apartment . . .

    hop plants vs rhizomes

A big difference in GLH's stock from a lot of others is that I operate a clean stock program like the National Clean Plant Program set up by the Feds. All our plants (and growing methods) are licensed and inspected by the USDA. I am a CIP -continous improvement program- grower/supplier...

    Fertilizer rates per plant

Remember that they are recommending total fert per year - not in one app. Most guys run 75 to 150 lbs N /Acre/year depending on soil type. It is actually more important to get the right nutrient there at the right time -ie. Nitrate in spring, Potassium in fall. Hops don't require much Phophate...

    indoor hops

You can grow extremely short hops that will get cones, if you understand the photoperiod requirements for hops. I will produce cones on plants one foot tall if I expose them to the wrong daylength and intensity. (I'm a propagator and coneset is the last thing I want to see:))14 hour-plus...

Thanks for the defense guys! And if anybody knows a way to ship a big hop crown for less than $10.95 USPS let me know.

    Hop plant rhizome formation

Here's a pic of what rhizomes forming on a dormant hop crown look like. There seems to be some confusion out there about Hop plants, crowns, roots , rhizomes and how they all relate. A pic is worth a thousand words.:) These are dormant crowns - a complete hop plant with dormant buds and root...

    Growing hops in Florida.

If you use the search feature of this forum you can find quite a few threads on growing hops in Florida. Cascade seems to be the most popular choice.

What type of hops to grow in Indiana

Growers in Indiana order a lot of Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, and Nugget. I would recommend looking at the newer varieties that have resistance to mildews. The old varieties like Saaz, Fuggle, and Golding are pretty susceptible to it and don't yield as well as the new hybrids.

What to do with my cuttings...

Might I suggest if you tip them out of the pot and see thick white roots (not the little hair ones) your plants should be mature enough to overwinter in the ground. You can bury them, pot and all and put a good layer of mulch over them. Then you can uncover them in early spring and move them...

    Willamettes in the Midwest

I've been monitoring comments on Willamette for a couple of years now. Either it grows fine or is total fail - doesn't seem to be related to soil or environment; cause the comments come in from all over the US. IMHO I think there is an virus infected source that is being distributed...

    Willamettes in the Midwest

Your a pretty lucky guy, cause you can plant hop plants anytime between now and spring im Missouri. If you want rhizomes, you will have to wait til they are available- which is next spring. We are currently shipping a lot of southern states, who like to plant them during their "cool" season.

quote: went out to harvest again today and got about 3 gallons of cones. once again i noticed even more burrs forming as well as new cones. this is awesome! Curiousity question - Are your hops planted in a spot where they are exposed to a light all night - say a street or security light? (the...

    FirstyearcrownbudformationofhopcultivarquotCentennialquot

first season crown of plant from top cutting taken in April. Pic taken in mid October. Centennial branches profusely from the base compared to Chinook. Cascade also has this finer branching habit. Yields of Centennial and Cascade can be improved by pruning them out to 4 to 6 major bines.

first season crown of plant from top cutting taken in April. Pic taken in mid October. Chinook does not branch out at the base - it forms fewer, larger stems.
