    Hops and deer

If Hops are the first green thing that comes up in your yard, you can bet those crazy rabbits will make lunch out of it:)

    Rhizomes after one year

You definitely have all the "right" tools for the job LOL. How'd you ever sneak that glass out of Holland? Those Dutch Boys are pretty tight!:D

Soil type and choosing hop variety?

We are finding that as long as the roots can penetrate the soil deeply they are quite tolerant of soil types. Alkalinity / pH is a bigger factor - Above pH 6.8 most varieties yields taper off (Sterling seems to buck this ). Kent Golding, Hallertauer, and Saazer are the fussiest about having...

Hops are growing already, is that bad?

We had a real mid winter here in Michigan, too. Our varieties with weak dormancy like Saazer, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook are all pushing elongated crown buds. The cold should temper them and slow them down - no worries. Do transplant them before the hops start growing rapidly -they grow so...

Growing hops beside pine and spruce trees

Your hops will probably grow quite well near the pines, but be aware that spidermites often overwinter on evergreen pine and spruce. If you do seem to pick up a lot of spidermite activity early you will know their source. The trees could be sprayed pre-season with a dormant oil to knock down...

    Hersbrucker?

Hersbucker is the old german landrace that is in the Saazer class varietals (source USDA) - has low yields so it is not grown commercially here - hence, no rhizomes. However, Mt. Hood is really close. The next closest would be Hallertauer (US) then Santiam & Spalter Select. Hope this helps if...

    Hops?

Might I suggest Centennial or Cascade - They both throw more smaller bines from the crown instead of a few big primary bines. This makes them "bushier" (is that a legit term?) They take trimming better, also. Nugget throws a few big primary bines but may be easier to train horizontal like grapes.

    hop vine support structures...

A 20' flagpole works great. Plant your hops in a 12' circle around it. Replace the hoist rope with a heavier one and add a metal loop around the pole where the flag clip is located. Attach your growing twines to the loop and hoist 'em up (you can lower them in the fall to p1ck 'em) Looks like a...

    indoor hops

We have experimented with several plant growth regulators such as diazide, Bonzi, Cycocel, etc, with no luck on height control - the plants are too vigorous and grow through them. The PGR's did initiate onset of cones though.

Second Year Hops grower - Prep advice

To add to B-Hoppy - you should see quite a bump in cone production this season. If you haven't installed a dripper water system yet, you should consider it. The system can be easily automated by using a simple lawn irrigation controller. Each "Zone" becomes a row. Pre-emergent weed control is a...

    saaz and cascade

I could probably hook you up with both - but I do complete plants - not rhizomes. I could use another 2L flask in the tissue culture lab . . . private message me if your good with it:)

    Hops for sale

I would suggest checking with the local brew pubs and craft brewers near your farm before you plant. Sometimes you can hook up with a local buyer if you are growing the variety they want. Also, look for a grower group in your area to join - shared equipment for harvesting and processing can...

    adding coffee grounds to hops

Another "tip" - Try adding some sugarcane molasses to your fert program. It is a natural biostimulant, chelates minor elements, makes your fert work more efficiently. It works both as a drench or foliar spray. One quarter cup in a 2 gal. sprayer. Be sure to use cane molasses, the sugar beet type...

    Zeus hops substitution

Zeus and Columbus have the same brewing profile - or close enough to cause a lawsuit. However, the plants are different. Columbus breaks dormancy a lot quicker and has green stems, while Zeus is a bit slower and has reddish coloring in the bines. I think the trade really messed up when they let...

Looking for anyone growing less common/unique/"old" hop varieties

Hello Canada! If different is what you are looking for- check out Varieties like Challenger, Canadian Red vine, Horizon, Perle, Santiam, Viking, or Vojvodina. All have distinct profiles and come from lines of Zattler, Savalof, Saxon, etc. Not exactly your run of the mill 4C's. You could talk...

    Idea: "boxing in" the hops?

You might want to consider reducing the number of varieties in that small a space. Most hops develop 30-40" side arm branches -which cause the tangling. Good rule of thumb between varieties is 6' between. (Unless you don't mind a little mixing:)) Same variety?- then 3 foot spacing is fine.

    Full sun or partial

Hey there Texans! Those hops have shallow feeder roots which can get cooked if the soil temps get too high. As possible solution to keeping the soil temps down (besides mulch) might be to place something between the rooting zone and that afternoon sun - a low fence, doghouse, bench - anything...

    Rhizomes in SE Michigan

For best pricing check out our Facebook page:) If you're local enough, drop on by - I have some stock that is too big to ship! (unless you're a millionaire):D If not, you can pre-order and put in the date you want them shipped . . . If rhizomes are your thing - I recommend Freshops or...

    Successfully Growing Indoors

A quick note on growing them indoors - running the lights 16 hours per day (or more) will keep them in a vegetative phase. When you want to start producing cones; shorten the "day" to about 10-12 hours. But don't go shorter than 8 hours or you will induce dormancy. Great leaf color! Brew On!

How far apart should twine be?

First year from rhizomes you will probably only get one or two primary bines. You can put up to 6 bines on a single twine. So, first year spacing won't be much of an issue- you can just slide the pots farther apart as they grow. Daytripper makes a good point to have plenty of separation between...
