    How to Grow Hops

It's not too late in the season. We have a lot of guys that are still planting.

    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

I like to take the cutting just before the buds break into shoots, but they root fine if they are past that stage. (They are just a little easier to handle - the new shoots are really easy to break off or damage.)

    Frost in NE

Growers Notes: Using water as frost protection. Sprinklers do work well to provide frost protection. The reason it works is because water gives off about 1 1/2 degrees of heat as it turns to ice. This doesn't sound like much heat, but it is enough to keep the forming ice and plants just above...

    Oregon Hop Quarantine ?!?!

The states with quarantines and restrictions have identified potentially devastating diseases in some of their hopyards - it is a problem in THEIR states. (Funny they can ship stuff out of state, though) We CAN ship into these states - BUT - each state requires a specific individual inspection...

Bought Great Lakes Hops for SE Penn.

It is a tough decision on which way to go - FB or a stand alone website. I've seen way too many "secure transaction" websites get their info totally hacked. Me and my team figured FB is more secure, but added security comes with added scrutiny (maybe too much). In a virtual world where everyone...

    second year planting

The whole "trim" thing revolves around whether the first shoots emerged so early that a late freeze might set them back - in that case, trim. Otherwise, pick out the 4,6,or 8 bines that will be your primary bines and trim out the late emerging ones. Sometimes the first couple bines come out so...

Bought Great Lakes Hops for SE Penn.

I agree the Facebook page is a less than a perfect site BUT- 1. Facebook's selling app is less than a year old and is being updated continuously. 2. FB has a much broader reach than any website and is much more secure than any individual website. 3. it allows our customers to interact with us...

    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

Leave the hop leaves on - sticking the cutting into the media until the node touches the media surface. The more leaf area you have on the cutting; the better your humidity and mist control has to be. You also can make multiple node/leaf cuttings - by sticking the second node into the media...

    Best Hallertau Hybrid

The Hallertauer "sisters" all have great brew profiles (Mt. Hood is about the closest to Hallertauer M. in my opinion). Be aware that the Hallertauer genome doesn't grow like the American genome (Cascade, Centennnial, Brewers Gold family. They hate wet feet over winter and don't start rockin'...

    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

The peroxide / peracetic acid mix we use is a commercial product that is very strong and we dilute it down to 1:100 -500 or less. I would guess diluting household peroxide by 10X would be close. Try it on a couple of leaves first before you spray the whole plant. A tip for rooting without growth...

Hop Rhizome Recommendations for NJ and New England

There is a really good study done by the state of Vermont on varieties for the East Coast. I posted it at our site - Look in the left margin for "Docs" (documents). In the long history of hop growing in the U.S., your area was the first to grow them. Did you know the Puritans grew Hops?:)

    Challenger, target, northdown rhizomes?

We have Challenger, Viking, and Vojvodina all available. They are great for guys that want to expand their brewing from the citrusy american types. I like the Vojvodina - it is a "super -Golding" -( like Centennial is a "super-Cascade").

    Anyone have columbus rhizomes?

No 'somes here, but we have Columbus crowns and plants. If you want rhizomes, check with Dave at Freshops.

    Hops in indiana

You should be able to grow about every hop variety there is:) Indiana / Ohio used to grow a lot of hops for the beer brewers in Detroit.

    Spring hops growing prep reminder

The place to start on pest control is a good spring clean up. Aphids and mites eggs over winter on about anything, but they tend to move to plants/weeds that stay alive late into the fall and re-sprout early in the spring. Perennial weeds, in particular, are favs because the pests move down...

    Spring hops growing prep reminder

This is not so much a question as a couple of reminders for some of the newer growers of hops. First off, if you had bugs last year (you're lucky if you didn't), you should seriously consider a dormant oil spray by the second week of March. Most of the U.S. had a very mild winter without the...
