    Light damage

Ahh that explains things. Is there any way for normal people to do this to their hops? Or does it require special machines? Thanks.

    Light damage

New Castle is in a clear bottle and where I buy it (Wal Mart) it's right under the flourescent lights. I've read flourescent lights produce the same skunk that sunlight does. I drink this beer every now and then and love it. There are absolutely no "skunk" flavors in New Castle. Is there perhaps...

    Light damage

What I don't understand is how New Castle and Heineken (just to name a few) get away with clear and green bottles. How is this so?

Want to start a second brew - need direction

Hey guys. Well I bottled my first batch Saturday (a brown ale) and now I believe it's time to begin another. I really like Flying Dog's (colorado based microbrewery) Golden Ale. It kind of tasted like a Pale Ale, just not AS hoppy. Anyone know of any good Golden Ale recipes similar to this? Thanks!!

    Another Fermentation Question

Everything sounds good. I would be careful though, and not let your temperature slip past 76 degrees. After 80 degrees, the beer will produce esters, which would give your beer a fruity off taste, which in most cases isn't desirable. I have the same problem with keeping the temperatures stable...

    Another Fermentation Question

Although I'm new, I'd wait about 2-3 days and take another gravity reading. It with almost seems if the gravity has went down by half, it might be nearly finished with the vigourous fermentation. My first brew only actively fermented for 1-2 days, then it went to 1 bubble every 2-5 minutes. My...

    Emissivity

Well this is obvious enough, but make sure there is relativity the same amount of heat being applied. If you have a pressure gauge of some sort, that could help to find more of an accurate assessment.

Sweet - a local homebrew store

Well, this probably isn't relevant to most people here, but I found a local homebrew supply store near where I live. I live in Louisiana, and there are no big homebrew supply stores. I searched the yellow pages, google, everything to find something around here. Sure enough there is a family...

    Glass vs. "Better Bottle"(plastic) Carboys???

Like I said, it seems most people buy them for convenience of weight and no glass shattering. Obviously it's a very debatable subject, and either one will work fine. I'm just saying that I would perfer carboys over plastic, though others may disagree. This is normal :) If I had back problems...

    Glass vs. "Better Bottle"(plastic) Carboys???

"Can be scratched. Will show signs of wear and tear. Ultra long term oxygen permeablilty questioned by some. Tendency to flex if you pick up a full one, possibly allowing airlock water into your wort." Just those mentioned above will keep me from buying a BB. Scratches could harbor...

    First brew bottled

Yeah I'm thinking it should be fine. Another question though. I came out around 9 bottles shy. Is this normal? Overall I took 3 hydrometer readings, may have left 1 beer (could be 2 not sure) in the secondary because there was a decent size yeast cake on the bottom, and spilled a little bit...

    First brew bottled

Well, Saturday I bottled my brown ale!! Final alcohol content was 5.4%! Overall, bottling was a piece of cake. I had a friend and my father helping out, so it wasn't bad at all. There were a few minor problems. One was I boiled the priming sugar solution a little late, and had to cool it before...

    Bottling day - Closing questions

Hey guys, what's going on? Well, today is finally bottling day. I was patient and let the beer ferment for 1 week, and 2 weeks in the clearing tank. Hopefully I can save these beers for 3 weeks :mug: Well I do have a few questions before I begin bottling today. - How would you sanitize your...

What's your S/HHMBO's opinion on Beer

My finance used to not even like beer. She got started on Bud Lite, then she graduated and now she we try any beer that I buy. She doesn't like pale ale's or extreme bitter/hoppy beers. She does however like malty beers. Right now her favorite is Shiner Bock and New Castle. I'm just thrilled...

    Midwest Supplies woes

Alright guys I do not want a debate on the topic. All I'm saying is it took longer than expected to ship, and it wasn't a big deal. And I was just a little upset for waiting a week for a thermostat, and then it nearly kills me when it comes in. I'll take the "woes" as "calamity" from the...

    Midwest Supplies woes

After rereading my post, I don't see where I put any blaim on Midwest. I started with the mailing taking a little too long but like I said, not a big deal. And the thermostat blowing couldn't be their fault unless they manufactor their own thermostat. Just saying for 2 orders and 2 problems, it...

    Basic cider recipe?

Ahh I see, that cleared things up. Thanks!

    Basic cider recipe?

One last question I suppose. Is it not true that I could either carbonate it with priming suger (like most ciders sold at stores) or leave it flat (which I assume is "Apfelwein"). Is this correct, or is Apfelwein different in other ways?

    Basic cider recipe?

Thanks a lot. I might buy a new fermenter before I begin this adventure. 3 months using one of my beer fermenters just won't do!! :)
