BG-14 Burner Problems with Half Tank--and propane questions

I have a Blichmann burner and my propane tank would freeze up on the outside and the gas flow would slow to a trickle. It definitely wouldn't maintain a boil. I solved the problem by putting the tank in a Rubbermaid tote and putting about 5-6" of water in it. No more freezing up and you can...

Looking fir good beer in Bloomingtlon Mn. Any suggestions?

Well if I was in town I would say my house! But I'm not. At any rate there are LOTS of breweries around since Minneapolis passes their new law allowing breweries to sell to the public on site. Some tap rooms even have live music on the weekends. There are way too many to list here but I...

Is my chiller coiled too tight?

I threaded 14 gauge wire between the coils on mine to allow for greater flow around/through the coils. I also stir constantly with a stainless steel spoon. I can drop from boiling to less than 140 in just minutes doing this. Getting down to pitching temps takes a little longer but the temp...

    Strike Temperature Question

My process is to hear the strike water to about 180, transfer it to my mashtun (igloo cube). Close the lid for 10 minutes to preheat the mashtun. Then I open it an stir til I hit my indicated strike temp. Usually somewhere around 163 or so, add my grains and stir well. Keep storing if...

    football water coolers.

I drilled a hole in the front of the cube for the spigot. I use a cpvc manifold and only leave about 16 ounces of liquid behind. I believe the 70 quart cube just has a domed lid, the cooler is the same size I believe.

    football water coolers.

My mashtun is an igloo cube that holds 60 quarts (15 gallons). I use a cpvc manifold and it can make a pretty big beer. I just did a winter warmer ale with 27.5 pounds of grain in there. Now I just wish they made an 80 quart!

Is a Blichmann burner worth the bucks?

I have had one for about a year. It brings my keggle up to temp much better than the turkey fryer did. It's quite sturdy and well built. But I'm hoping to go electric and avoid having to buy propane for brewing. Someday ......

Correct Mash Tun Specific Heat for 10 gal Cooler?

If you do a search for calculating thermal mass you will find a process to find what works for your setup. It's too much for me to try to duplicate here. But it did give good numbers for my software to work with.

    Thermometer calibration

The ice water method is better than the boiling method. The boiling point of water changes with elevation changes.

    Low Efficiency Continues (Lengthy Description)

Do you intend to end up with 11.5 gallons per batch? If so, change the batch size in your software. That will help your math to agree. If you intend to end up with 10 gallons ten use need to stop your spare once you've reached your intended batch size plus whatever is your boil off amount...

    Low Efficiency Continues (Lengthy Description)

Your problem lies with all of the water loss calculations. You need to determine the value for each of those on your own based on your setup. Determine your dead space loss, boil off rate and other needed values and plug them into your software. It sounds like you may be using some default...

    Problems with bayou burner

The Rubbermaid with water will keep your propane at a more consistent temp do the gas flows much better. I figured this out brewing in garage in MN in the winter! A wind guard is nice too but secondary to your problem. Good luck!

    Problems with bayou burner

If your propane tank is icing heavily you will benefit from putting it in a Rubbermaid container about 1/2 full of water. The valve on the inside of the tank is inhibiting your flow. You are using propane faster with the bigger burner which is what causes this issue. I had this issue with...

    Plastic taste in beer

The braided Vinyl tubing I have seen is only rated to about 180 degrees. If you go over that temp you will likely extract flavors that you won't like. Go with silicone tubing as its rated to 500 degrees.

    Barley Crusher O-Ring

You can ignore the o-ring issue. It has pens to all of them but really isn't an issue from what I've heard. In regard to the drill a two speed drill really works better. Put it on the slower speed and you can run it about 1/2 throttle. You want to target about 200-400 rpms. Do a small...
