    Possible lambic yeast?

For god's sake, drop $3.50 and buy a sachet of US-05! It's not worth the time and money on making a batch of wort just to pitch some random yeast in there

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

Drop them an email or call. I think the local winners all had to stop by the store to pick up prizes.

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I stopped by the store a week or so ago, George and Nancy were still trying to get sponsors who committed to actually send them the prizes. There are some other logistical things, but they haven't forgotten--at least they won't if I keep bugging them

South Jersey/Philly Group Buy... ROUND 33!

Yeah I assumed this was a go since we were PM'd the pick day and time

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

Also, I think it should be noted that different styles of beers have different difficulties to make and expectations. I think most would agree that an average big Imperial Stout should be a pretty good beer because it is so big and powerful that it might overcome shortcomings in fermentation...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I think they still need to get a couple of the ribbons back from the people that got bumped up. Other than that, they are probably preparing the swag and ribbons to go out soon

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

A totally worthwhile experience, IMO. I learned so much about competition tasting, judging, organization, etc from my first experience here with HOPS-BOPS. I'd been looking into being a BJCP judge for a while, but this was a nice introduction to the process. I just need to find a beer judging...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

30 is a pretty good score. I heard some of the judges there were very disappointed with the quality of the pale ales and also the IPA's at a different table :p

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

Congrats! I had 2 beers in sour ales and went home with nothing. My beers suffered from undercarbonation. I think they just needed more time in the bottle to fully condition or maybe I should've added some fresh saccharomyces to help the process

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I think score sheets are what matter and the ribbons are just a nice reward. Nice thing is that if you get a ribbon, you win a prize. Could be a tee-shirt, opener, or some beer! The only thing that sucks is for people like me that heavily favor certain styles. I pretty much only brew sours...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I know they contacted AHA and BJCP officials for some help interpreting the rules of what qualifies as a home brew. I think this is a grey area because recently we've seen a lot of successful homebrewers take the next step to be a commercial brewer, notably Jamil Zainesheff and locally, Scott...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I was told all score sheets were mailed on Tuesday night. So I would email Bruce, the organizer, and ask him to resend them or if maybe your email address was entered incorrectly.

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

Sometimes it's hard to identify specifically what a flaw or shortcoming in a beer is. I've been a craft drinker for 5 years and homebrewing for almost as long and sometimes I'll have a really fresh, hoppy IPA, but it just doesn't wow me. I don't know how to describe it, it's something in the...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

Just got back from the HOPS meeting, so I thought I'd fill you in. First, I think what many of us guessed was right. The hold up was on the eligibility of submitted beers. From the official HOPS-BOPS rules and regs: [/LIST] I think the issue is especially with one brewer who has a website...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I think the qualifications of the judges matter too. Dave Houseman and Pete Garofalo were there judging (both Grand Masters)-- those two guys were contributors in the first study guide and the style descriptions so I would trust their opinions. Newbie judges without any BJCP credentials? Maybe...

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

Holy hell, that's about a pound of hops in that IPA ( I know it's a double batch, but still). You must be a very rich man :p

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

No I stayed for the awards ceremony because I was helping out at the event and they gave out ribbons to the top 3 at each category/table. I think final results should be posted soon and tee shirts/swag will be mailed out to the winners

    HOPS-BOPS 2012 Results?

I got score sheets back too. Results were interesting... I entered a dry and wet-hopped gueuze in 23A but the judges really made little mention of the hops in that beer. Got a 38.5 in that flight. But the base beer entered as a Gueuze only scored 20.5?! I think my beer might have been...
