    76 degree basement

Same thing happened to us. After I finished it and got the ceiling installed it warmed up a little. A year later I added a 29 gallon fish tank and after adding the tank it warmed up the basement 5 degrees. Nothing else changed so I can only point to the fish as the reason. The tank is at 78...

    fermenting hot

Thanks for the advice. This morning it was back down to 70 degrees. I put it back in my basement and will check it when I get home. I'll pick up a plastic tub to set it in to keep it cool during these summer months.

    fermenting hot

The ambient temp isn't that much hotter than usual (maybe a few degrees). I am moving it to the garage for the night. It will be in the mid 60s tonight so that should get it down a bit..hopefully. edit: I moved it and wrapped it in towels soaked with cold water. Hopefully tonight it...

    fermenting hot

I am brewing the Austin Homebrew honey wheat partial mash. It's my seventh batch. I cooled it to 70 with my wort chiller and then added the dry yeast (SafBrew T58). I then put the fermenter on my basement floor (basement is around 70 degrees, floor is a bit colder). I just checked and...

    TAP-A-DRAFT: first impression...

Thanks for the info. I cold crashed before I bottled into the TAD. In two more days they will be two weeks old but I am going to wait another week before chilling one and giving it a try.

    Question on reusing yeast cake

I used White Labs British Ale 005. The first beer was a MW Big Ben Pale Ale and the second AHS Fuller's London Porter clone. Hopefully the porter turns out... :)

    Question on reusing yeast cake

I just pitched a porter onto a pale ale cake a few days ago. What I did though was put the cake into a sanitized container, clean and sanitize the primary then put the wort and the proper amount of cake back in (using an online yeast calculator). In less than 24 hours it was going crazy. I...

    Noob Nerves About Airlocks

My first brew I broke the gasket. I end up putting some electrical tape around the gasket (on the top of the lid) to seal it. The beer turned out fine.

If a full boil is possible, DO IT!!

    Sorry, I misread that.

Anything OxiClean Free isn't good for?

I've read it is not safe for aluminum pots but I'm not sure why or if it's true.

    Beer Smith and overhopping

Was this an Austin kit? I entered their London Porter and the IBUs were way off. I had Beersmith set at a 2.5 gallon boil. When I convert it to 5 gallons the IBUs matched. I emailed them and it turns out the recipe was for a 5 gallon boil even though it didn't state it.

If a full boil is possible, DO IT!!

I thought (and Beersmith shows) that you do have to modify the hop schedule for a full boil if the recipe is for a 2-3 gallon boil. If you don't the IBUs will increase.

I broke pretty much every rule in the book...

The pound of hops is what makes this fishy. Unless the OP grows them at home that is a LOT of money.

I broke pretty much every rule in the book...

Time fixes all beer, right? How long for that 1000 IBUs to tame down to a normal level?

    5 Gallon Boils

I used a flashlight last night and I was able to see the boil. Otherwise all I could see was steam.

    all grain question

I used my 7.5 gallon fryer for the first time last night. With 6.5 gallons it almost boiled over before the first break. Once that was done it boiled nicely. Here is a follow up all grain question. After the break my turkey fryer had a nice scum layer around the top edge. Once the boil was...

    Partial mash in a cooler

Tonight I did my first partial mash (London porter). I have a new turkey fryer so I was outside in the garage. I wanted to start before the kids went to bed but I couldn't go to the garage yet. Then I remembered reading about all grain mashing and how it is done in a modified cooler...

Where to find cheap extract kits?

Midwest has usually been cheaper for me when factoring in shipping (I am close).

    almost full boil?

jonp beat me to it - I doubt you will get 4 gallons to boil on a stove. I can barely get 2.5 to boil on our gas range. If you are going to try 4 gallons do a test run a few days before brewday.

    Partial Mash/full boil calculation question

I emailed AHS and they calculated the IBUs at 28 which is what I have for 5 gallons and using all of the hops. The recipe is for a 2.5 gallon boil. Something is not right here. It is looking like I should include all of the hops with my full boil even though I thought I'd be using less (about...
