This is exactly the information I wanted. A quick google search hit a million articles on the pros/cons of secondary in general, much of which was argued here, but you guys also answered my specific mouthfeel question. Thanks guys!

can you rack 5 gallons bucket primary to 3 gallon glass carboy?

What is the volume loss typically on a 5 gallon bucket batch after primary fermentation. I bought a buddy's 3 gallon glass carboy and I'd like to try a secondary. Anyone know how much liquid volume you get back?

    does secondary change mouthfeel?

I have a beer where I purposely coarse filtered coffee so as to have some gritty texture to the beer, to coat the tongue with coffee. I know even primary fermentation will clarify the beer and remove a lot of this sediment, but would secondary do it even more? What are the pros/cons to...

First time brewing in years, need help

Thanks for all the help guys, you were an invaluable resource for the first batch. The batch has been fermenting for about 5 days now, and when I squeeze the bucket a bit to vent gas, it smells EXACTLY like a pale ale (i.e. like it should). I'm so excited that I actually might have done...

First time brewing in years, need help

Thanks so much for the help guys, I have a few more questions that you can answer at your leisure: 1. First time brewing in years, need help

I can't believe how rapid and helpful these responses have been. This place really is great, especially for beginners! As for this: That is definitely what happened, I don't know that I even mixed it much (if at all) after I added the water before taking a sample.

First time brewing in years, need help

Hey guys, I just registered and I have seen a lot of question threads like this where people have gotten great advice. I brewed a few batches in college, mostly of hard cider, and honestly I wasn't very scientific about it (didn't take SG or temperature readings, didn't really care too much...
