    There's usually resistance on the neutral and this can effect how and if a circuit breaker will trip if there isn't a ground

    You can't just swap the ground for the neutral!!! To do this correctly you need a piece of 8-4. By not having a ground your playing with the ability of the circuit breaker to trip out on a short circut to ground!

    I agree with your dad on the 240v elements. You need a neutral to trip a GFCI and your elements don't have one!

    240V extension cord?

    You need 10/3 SJO Cord. The heating elements only have connections for 2 wires. The third wire is your ground. The 4th wire wouldn't do you any good for this unless you were putting a 120/240v panel on your rig.

    Isolation Transformer solution for 240 V GFCI problems?

    If you install an isolating transformer and feed your 120v devices off or it you've defeated your GFCI protection on this "new" Circuit.

    Much easier and cheaper to use a dedicated 15 or 20 Amp 120v GFCI circuit.
