What makes people here say, "now thats a saison"?

I am just drinking my 2nd Dupont and you are right! It does smell like an old dirty blanket a horse or dog has been sleeping on. For me, the Dupont is a little too much like a Belgian for me. Just a little too pucker-forward. Colette, on the other hand, I really like.

    blichmann auto-sparge

I have used one for about a year now. Dead nuts simple and effective. So much easier than fly sparging. Also, it works well for pump circulation during the mash. Very nice product. Well worth the price.

    Bottle Hopping

I should have pointed out that my beer was kegged and fully carbed before I put it in the bottle. I don't think I would have attempted this if I was bottle-conditioning the beer.

A Controversial Question: What is the best crappy beer?

I had a PBR in my keggerator that one of my son's friends left. I thought I would give it a try since there seem to be so many people that seem to "like" it. Honestly...it had the aroma of dog poop from the back yard. I tasted it anyway and it tasted like dog poop smells. I don't know what is...

    Bottle Hopping

I tried hopping in the bottle a couple days ago and, so far, the results are spectacular. I just filled a few bottles with my Chincade APA and then added 1/10 ounce of Cascade whole/leaf hops to each bottle and capped them. After 24 hours I drank one. I just poured the beer gently and the...

    Belgians-blech

Back in 2013 I tried really hard to like Belgian beer. I brewed and drank 5 gal each of Belgian Pale Ale Belgian Dubbel Belgian IPA Belgian Tripel I tried two different yeasts Wyeast 1214 Wyeast 3522 - Ardennes The Ardennes yeast was much better in that it had a milder "pucker", but try...

    Share hop blocker experience

I use whole hops and considered the hop blocker. However, I think I have found a simpler solution. I slip a stainless steel scrubby over the inlet of my boil kettle drain. That does the trick. I have had 6 oz of whole hops in a 7 gal pot and never had a problem. BTW, the SS scrubby should...

Give me an American pale ale. I like the entire range of American pale ales.

Beersmith Question with All Grain Kit

Just be careful. With boiling water you may extract tannins giving you a harsh bitter flavor.

    I don't have beer smith

Wouldn't the multiplier be 75/37.5 = 2.0 ? That is, it takes twice the grain bill to get the same OG? Anyway, buy (insignificant price) BeerSmith. You will get more than you pay for and you will support a huge contributor to home brewing.

    I don't have beer smith

Given the price of BeerSmith and the effort required to download and install it and your overall investment in home brewing, I cannot imagine a reason why you would not purchase it. Just go get it. You will be happy you did.

Homebrewing as a way to save money

Well, actually it is quite a bit better than that. I expect after you consider all the earnings-oriented taxes, that most people are in the 25 - 40% tax marginal tax bracket . Taking a 33% average, a penny saved is really about 1.5 pennies earned. That is, you have to earn 1.5 pennies to...

    Chugger pumps

My chuggers are mounted in an open frame that acts as a carrier and shield. If they are just sitting on the floor running (recirculating, sparging and pumping to chiller) there is never a problem. Only once I set one down in a pot to catch wort when I was pulling hoses and forgot to remove it...

    Kicked my first keg!

No. You don't drink that much. That is only 1-2 beers per day, which by the way, is a medicinal and recommended level of drinking. Seriously! :D Last year, I felt obligated to drink virtually everything I brewed - which was a 5 gal batch every 2 weeks. Hey, I guzzled 20 gal of various Belgian...

Loss of bright hop flavors and aroma

Yep. That is a great article. I actually have been doing pretty well with almost all of it except keeping it in the keg too long. It really became obvious when I racked my latest APA to the secondary for clarifying. It is only 2 weeks since the boil and it was already very nice, light, hoppy...

Homebrewing as a way to save money

You know, I have stopped calculating the cost of brewing. After taking into consideration grains, hops, water additions and supplies, I expect I am spending close to $40 a 5 gal batch. But honestly, there is no way to use cost savings as a justification when I have $2K - $3K in equipment...

    Top 5 Beers thread

Hmmm... That's ok. I tried real hard to like English and Belgian ales, but just can't seem to cultivate a taste for them. My tastes are not well rounded - but that's ok. I enjoy what I drink and brew. I hope you do too! :mug:
