got an extract kit as a gift...should I modify?

I say brew it as it is. Is was a gift. Maybe you can send them a 12 pack of the final product. Maybe it'll give you time to think too. I don't know about you, but I always appreciate a gift more than if I bought it myself. E

    Making sense of starters?

Good to know. I've been doing 500ml starters about 24 hours before I pitch. Time to look for a gallon jug. Thanks E

Deaf delivery guy + broken door bell = awkward

Hahaha. This is classic. I hate to be the "guy" who brings up old threads, but just had to. This could have ended up where both guys got pissed, but it was all OK. I can kind of relate because my wife and I have been teaching our sons sign language since they were 6 months young. There is no...

Anyone ever mashed one day brewed the next?

Oh. I'm not leaving the grains in the water. I pull & rinse the grains, then put a lid on the pot. Thanks for the info. I got a little concerned after reading this thread. E

Anyone ever mashed one day brewed the next?

mmmm. This leads makes me wonder. I do extract and have been steeping grains in the afternoon, then finish the rest at night. Would that cause souring?? Thanks E

Corn Sugar vs. Dry Rice Extract

Thanks. The kit that I brewed over the summer had 3lbs of DME, 3lbs of Dry Rice Extract, and .5lbs of Crystal Malt. The lawnmower beer is a nice change from the porters, pale ales, and red ales I've been drinking. My LHBS sells 3lbs of Dry Rice Extract for $10.95 and 2lbs of Corn...

Corn Sugar vs. Dry Rice Extract

So, I know that corn sugar will "dry" the beer out. I'm assuming that rice extract will also dry out the beer. But, will it leave a little sweet taste in it? Thanks, E

Corn Sugar vs. Dry Rice Extract

Hey, A few month ago, I brew a LawnMower beer from my LHBS and it had Dry Rice Extract in the kit. So, I'm wondering what's the difference between Dry Rice Extract and corn sugar as fermebtables and/or taste or anything else. Thanks, E

Any good breweries in the Irvine area?

Oh yeah. You could also go to 2nd Street in Long Beach. Dominco's is my favorite restaurant down there. There's a sushi house somewhere there, a BJ's, a couple of coffee shops, and an ice cream shop. http://www.belmontshore.org/index.php?pageTurn=food Edit: Oh Yeah Again... Gordon...

Any good breweries in the Irvine area?

Yard House in the Irvine Spectrum. You could do some walking around and shopping. It's been a few years since I've been to the Spectrum. As as far as I can remember, it gets pretty busy at night. Some people dress up really nicely and others casually. I think they have something like over...

Introducing my: "WTF Else Could Go Wrong?" Ale...

I feel frustration. I'm a stay-at-home dad with 3 and 1 year old. I tried brewing during my youngest's nap ONCE. Just like you, everything seemed to wrong. Now, I prep everything and steep the grains during his nap, then finish brewing after everyone has fallen asleep. Anywho, I'm sure...

How to get into 10 gallon batches

Have you ever heard of the Darwin Awards?? E

    Off flavor

It probably flucuates, like someone already said. You can tell when they treated my tap water. You can smell chlorine as soon as you turn on the water. It's really hard to say if your other two batches will turn out the same way. I think you'll have to wait and see. It's probably a good...

    First batch of cider.

I'm curious as to what recipe you used. I'm thinking about brewing a batch this weekend. I'll probably try EdWorts's Apfelwein recipe. Thanks, E

    Possible Over-Carbonated Plastic PET Bottles.

All that technical stuff went over my head. :drunk: I stopped venting them on the 20th. I think they should be good to go now. Thanks again. I guess that's what happens when you try to rush a beer. I have a Red Ale in the fermenter now. I can't to bottle that and get a Porter in...

    So,,,,,how much will I save

I'm kind of in the same position. I have 2 kids and my time is very limitted. Not to mention that I'm a stay-at-home Dad and we live off of my wife's income (all by choice.) Almost all the equipment I have I got for b-days, X-mas, or father's day. I think I've only forked out about $40 to...
