    New time saving setup

FWIW: I soak mine in the laundry tub with Oxy, then submerge them in my bottling bucket filled with StarSan for 3 minutes, then drain and fill. It's tedious but I keg most of my 3 gallon batches.

    New time saving setup

When you say "save time" I assume you mean you want to brew your batches with less time spent in brewing, not necessarily waiting for the fermentation to complete. Racking from primary to secondary doesn't really cost you a lot of time, but perhaps you can look into ways to make your brew day...

    Holiday Ale help please

I used some Captain with my pumpkin spice ale and it worked well...figured it was a natural carrier since it was already a bit spiced.

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

I made one of these a couple years ago with a braided hose for the filter. After some batches of use the braided hose is a bit beat up and has collapsed a bit due to being knocked around while stirring the mash. I wonder if anyone has tried putting a spring inside the hose so it will keep its...

    Pumpkin chaos

For my 3.5 gallon batch, I roasted two butternut squash, probably came to between 3 and 4 lbs, scooped and puree'd, then added to my mash via the mash water. I had some brown sugar but also a high dosage of crystal to offset the dryness. Came out pretty good. I can taste the squash but it is...

    Tilt hydrometer for temperature control

I keep flirting with the idea of doing this myself (tilt/pi) but haven't pulled the trigger. If I were coding it, I think I might have it only switch the fridge on or off after multiple consecutive readings over/under the target. This should prevent stressing the compressor with too many...

Getting some hop cones on my first year plants

I planted mid-May in two big pots I bought at Menard's.

Getting some hop cones on my first year plants

I have a Liberty and a Centennial plant, both first year. My Centennial got a head start, but now I see a few small cones on the liberty as well. I don't expect a bumper crop, but glad to see something!

    Hops outgrowing trellis

There are some side arms that would be on the pot/ground if they are all loose. Will these be OK? Will they be able to produce anything like that?

    Hops outgrowing trellis

I have two first-year plants in big pots, one Liberty and one Centennial. I trained three main bines from each of the rhizomes up a twine that goes up at maybe a 30 degree angle. The main bines are maybe 8 feet long now and climbing steadily. I've got another 8 feet of twine to go though so...

10 year old hop vine.....dug it up!

"So we started a hop vine from seed about 10 years ago and it grew into a huge complex of roots that grew 15+ feet each year." I read this as the complex of roots grew 15+ feet each year!

    Struggling newbie! Help!

With my smaller batches I was really hesitant to waste samples of beer for checking gravity with a hydrometer, so I didn't. One other option is a refractometer. Though not as accurate once the beer is fermenting, you should be able to tell if the beer is done with multiple consistent...

any Hallertau hops rhizomes for sale ?

I strung my twines yesterday. They go up my deck posts, but not vertically, up at an angle. Liberty is up to about 8", but not quite long enough to reach the twine and grab hold. Another inch or so ought to do it. Should I put a twisty-tie on it to hold it to the twine initially? I also have a...

any Hallertau hops rhizomes for sale ?

Just planted a liberty rhizome a couple weeks ago here in MI and have some 4" shoots already. We've been getting a lot of rain too, so that helps.

Are you a Snob or an Enthusiast?

I brew all kinds of styles and will drink just about anything if offered. I still like the mass-produced lighter flavored lagers, especially during the summer months. Just more thirst quenching for me. Just last week I was traveling for work and there was a $1 PBR can special at a BBQ place -...

    Sparge liquor poll

I buy 5 gallons of RO water from the grocery store and treat it with CaCH and sometimes gypsum. My batches are 3 gallons so this 5 gallon jug is almost all I need for a batch. I mash and sparge with the same treated water, but may have to throw in a quart or two of untreated filtered water with...

I'm sad - 2 LHBS in my area have closed.

How far of a drive before you don't consider it "the local economy"? Question really to anyone...just curious.

I'm sad - 2 LHBS in my area have closed.

Right...Mine wasn't a well thought-out post. I was thinking a few things that I didn't type...about having to buy a grain mill for bulk grains, whether it would be worth it, etc. Bottom line - it would suck not having a nearby LHBS where I can go in buy almost any grain I need in small or large...
