When do 2nd year hops start sprouting?

It amazes me that you already have shoots. The snow is going to have to melt here before they sprout. It is usually last March. Do you plan to thin the shoots now or later? I tend to clip them early and forget to do it again before they take over. I then have too many shoots which is...

    Rhizome swapping thread 2011

I have Saaz. They need more sun than I have. I also have lots of Centennial and a few Willamette. I will dig them in March. I don't need more hops, so beer or some future crop would be great. I am in the southeastern Denver area if you want to dig them with me.

Colorado brewers: Free rhizomes from AC Golden Brewing (Coors)

Thank you for the referral. Likewise, if you want to trade other varities, I have Zeus and Centennial. I know of some Brewers Gold and Cascade, too. If you want to go really native, I know of some wild hops spots.

    Where to buy Hops

Remind me next March and I will give you some cuttings off of my Centennial hops.

Got some vine roots, what now?

Make sure to plan for the trellis system so that they can climb. You should plant the whole root without leaving anything showing.

    F#$% Growing hops, BREED HOPS!

I read that I had to freeze the hop seeds to crack the husks for proper germination. I stored them in the freezer for a few months prior to attempting germination in some special germination media that was covered. The rest of the plants germinated except for the hops. Next time, I will just...

    Frozen Hops

If they were not dried, you should dry them and then store them again. I have tossed hops in the freezer and they were fine, but it is really dry in Colorado. The drying process allows the grassy compounds to break down prior to brewing, however, only really wet hops will have grassy flavors...

    F#$% Growing hops, BREED HOPS!

You can also obtain seeds from the wild or from the US Dept of Agriculture. All of the seeds that I have collected from the wild have not germinated, but I will be collecting more soon. Does anyone have any success with germinating hops seeds? Methods?

    rhizome exchange (local)

I will try this method. In the past, I have simply dug up the shoots and a portion of the root to transplant. I have had good success with that. I have also rooted clippings. If anyone wants Centennial, Saaz or Zeus or Willamette next year, I am in the Denver area. I will give...

    Rhizome Exchange Anyone?

I have Centennial and Saaz. I will have Zeus and Willamette next year. I would give away clippings to anyone who wants to pick them up. You can root them in water. I am in the Denver area. I also plan to make a collecting trip for some wild hops. The Dept of Ag collects and documents...

    Does anyone want some cuttings?

I have clipped some of my hops and stuck them in a bucket of water. So far, they are alive. I will try some of the propagation methods and see how it goes. If anyone is in the Denver metro, I would be happy to trade Centennial for your varieties (or even give you some starts). I am in SE...

    Anyone still selling hop rhizomes?

You may want to take some clippings from existing vines, if you can find them. I am trying to propogate some plants from clippings. There is also a method where you can take a vine and bury a section at a leaf junction, which will form roots. After the roots grow, you can cut it and...

    Moving plants mid-season

Move half and see what happens. Personally, I would let them be. I have always moved them after the season.

    wild hop hunting

I wonder if the seed making process diminishes the AA%? The ones that I harvested had decent AA% and made seeds. The guys at the brew store thought that they were Hellertau-ish. I did not dig rhizomes, but I may.

    wild hop hunting

I found some wild hops on an old ranch in Colorado. I tried to germinate the seeds, but nothing came of it. I even froze them to simulate the winter. PM me if you would like the location of the hops. There were both male and female plants there. The USDA has plant collection expeditions...

    Looking For Hops

Is there interest in trading rhizomes? I have some older hops and they spread aggressively and I have pruned them in years past. I could just as easily trade them for other varieties.

    hops and frost question

Picking the cones after they turn brown will yield some lupulin, but they lose some flavor. I would wait until spring to prune rhizomes after you see shoots. They will start to grow in early spring.

    Hops - Questions about Rhizomes

I have always cut them with a sharp spade or a kitchen scissors in the spring when they are growing. I waited until spring so that I could include an active shoot in the cutting. They are really hearty plants. Older rhizomes get to be over an inch thick. If they produce cones, they are...

Hops just will not grow, too hot in SO Cal?

They may come back next year. I have had transplants seem to die but will restart the following season. Hops are a really tough vine and are hard to kill.

    Hops in Colorado

Does anyone want to trade hops? I have Centennial, Saaz and Cascade. I also have some wild hop seeds. PM me for trades. I am in the Aurora area.
