    Need a carboy hoist

I would strongly suggest getting rid of those glass carboys. Take it from someone who has had one break while moving it. I've had a couple of different pulleys to lift my BIAB grain bags and baskets and found that you really want one with a ratcheting system to hold the weight when you let go...

    Finings in the secondary.

First of all I stopped using a secondary step a decade or more ago. Beer will generally clear given time. Especially if you are kegging. The first pint poured may be cloudy but the rest will be fine. Yes, it can affect flavor but again, if you accept that the first pint goes down the drain the...

    2nd batch issues, maybe..

Let it go for the same amount of time as your first brew and then proceed on. It will be fine. Keep in mind that yeast are living creatures and they don't always behave as we would like them to. A few degrees of temperature variation can speed up or slow down their behavior. And that is only one...

    Focus for 2025?

My goal for 2024 was to finally brew again after finally getting shoulder surgery. Just as I was six months into rehab for that I was diagnosed with cancer. So my only goal for 2025 is to beat this, get and stay healthy, and maybe brew some. It's been April of 2023 since I made a batch.

Denny's Rye IPA, Anybody ever brew this?

It used to be my "house" beer. I brewed it at least once or twice every year for as long as I can remember.

    full volume mash

Correct. There is a true partigyle and then a homebrewers over simplified version. For anyone who reads this and is curious about true partigyle methods I suggest the book "Guile Brews" by Peter Symons.

    full volume mash

Jiminy Christmas what bad advice! No. No they are not the same method. No sparge starts with your full volume of water with no sparging at all. Fly sparge starts with a pre set volume of water to mash with - then add sparge water on top of the grain bed at the same time that wort is being...

    Digital Scale Recommendation?

Before I packed away my ammo reloading equipment I used the same scale I used for measuring out propellant similar to this one: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1026130895?pid=121740 Now I use this purchased from my LHBS...

Puzzle: Volume<->Gravity calculation Beersmith vs reality

It is imperative that you customize your equipment profile(s) when using Beersmith. Everything relies on that. Watch the video link below and take actual measurements as you go. Even then you will want to take real world measurements during your brew day and use those to tweak that equipment...

    Is "Christmas Ale" a Style?

Free yourself and you mind by putting aside the idea of styles. Just make beer.

    Buying by the sack?

Your local brewery connection orders malts half a dozen times a year...that's every 2 months... and you can't wait for their next order? I'm assuming the reason you don't want to wait is that you are planning a brewday or two right away? If that's the case just buy what you need for now and...

    Barleywine

I don't use molasses to make my invert. I start with raw sugar like Turbinado.

What is the big deal with.....

To piggyback on what Bobby said ( If you always pound the beer in the hazy state and call it good, you won't have the benefit of knowing if the clear version of it was better or not.) You sometimes will run across a comment from someone who's keg just kicked saying that the last pour was the...

BYO - no more printed magazines

My subscription ended today and I did not renew. I'm done. There are plenty other available sources of content and information that I don't need to spend my retirement income on BYO.

What hops you you use/keep on hand the most?

The answer to this question depends on what styles you make most. I make a lot of English porters, stouts, bitters and mild so I keep a lot of EKG and Fuggle with some US hops for bittering.
