    Mt. Strumpet

This is my Simcoe bomb. It is based on the BYO Two Hearted clone recipe. The only significant difference is the overwhelming Simcoe. This beer does not age well -- you really want to drink it young. After the dry hopping, it should almost taste like hard grape fruit juice. Bottle it, let it...

Richmond VA Water Good for Homebrew?

I do use Richmond tap water with no filtering. I haven't noticed any problems, but I may have a different opinion after I get my score cards back from the Dominion Cup.

    Why Blichmann Kettles?

They are a quality product. In my experience, you pay the money for the good tools or you will spend half your time fighting your equipment. Besides, they are damned sexy and they make all your brewing buddies jealous. +1 on using Barkeep's Friend on the beer stone.

chilling wort with a frozen wiffleball bat

Then I would recommend a recirc pump (400gph or so), some ice and a cooler (I reuse my mash tun). I get about 14 lbs of ice and 3g of water cooled down to 8C in the cooler. I switch from the ground water to the recirc pump when the wort cools to 30-35C. I wimped out in mine and went with...

    plastic and glass

The potential problem with buckets is that they scratch. The scratches can provide bacteria, wild yeast and other critters a place to hide from the sanitizer. Sooner or later, scratched plastic will yield an infection. Glass doesn't scratch normally and the Better Bottles are made from a very...

Star San to Sanitize Brew Water?

Starsan is safe for yeast only above a pH of 3.5. Below that, it will kill yeast just like it kills everything else (all of this is explained in Brew Strong's episode on sanitizing). I would anticipate that you would have to mix it to have pH of 3.5 or less in order to sanitize the water. At...

can i use food oils to lube my keg orings?

I am pretty certain the real answer is "no". Vegetable oils like that will break down over a very short period of time. They will become rancid and who knows what will find a home in it. Keg lube is a petroleum gel (think food grade Vasoline). It will take a much longer time to degrade, I...

    Thermometers

Thermapens. ThermoWorks – MTC Mini Handheld Thermocouple is a very popular model. If you combine it with the right temperature probes like ThermoWorks – Thermocouple Wire Probes., you have almost no worries about water destroying it. They are very accurate. I really love mine, and...

    "designing great beers", second edition?

I own and frequently read "Designing Great Beers". I consider this one of my best resources when I want to write my own recipe. Is there a second edition? DGB covers some styles I like, the pale ales and IPAs, and then spends a lot of time on styles I don't brew. I am looking for another...
