    quick, improper chill?

I had a friend stop by to kill a couple hours tonight before he went to work at his 11p-7a shift. I was telling him about how I've been brewing and he wanted to try my first batch, a belgian golden, which has only been in the bottle for 10 days. I probably should have just told him it isn't...

How long to "age" your beer

I struggle with this in my head all the time. I have a blueberry wheat going for SWMBO that was in primary for 7 days and has now been in secondary for 3 days. Gravity is stable. Do I bottle it this weekend after 7pri/7sec or do I let it mass condition for another week in secondary? It's a...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I wish I was brewing this weekend. I've got one bucket tied up with my blueberry wheat for SWMBO, the other bucket tied up with my IPA and I obviously can't use my 3rd bucket because I'm going to need it for bottling. Me thinks I need another bucket. :p

I have 3 weeks to decide how to dry how...I'll let you decide...

Let me know what you decide on, Jayman. I'm in the same boat right now and was planning on doing 4 weeks primary while dry hopping pellets with no bag for the last 7 days.

    vodka in airlock?

I've always just used sanitizer. However, I might give vodka a try for the following reason: StarSan obviously bubbles/lathers up like soap. When I get a really active fermentation going, the sanitizer bubbles up a little bit and this can cause the bubbles to reach out and go out the top of...

    Dishwasher to sanitize bottles?

I rinse my bottles in the sink after pouring. I fill halfway with hot water once, shake and dump. This gets out the yeast and leftover beer. Fill halfway and shake again, store upside down to dry. Then I throw them in the dishwasher on the sanitize setting shortly before bottling...

My first batch in 11 years

I think you're right. I put this thing 4 steps (on the landing) from being on the 3rd floor. It's pretty much the hottest time of the year here, it's gets downright nasty up there on that 3rd floor. I thought it was perfectly fine at the time and now, 3 short weeks later, I look back and...

    Dry hopping in secondary...

Afer all this great advice, I am regretting that I racked my blueberry wheat to secondary yesterday morning :D The airlock on the IPA that I brewed on Saturday night smells AMAZING though. That baby is definitely going to go the distance in primary and I am pretty psyched to try it that way...

    Dry hopping in secondary...

Thanks for all the great advice, guys. I'm pretty excited for this batch!

    Dry hopping in secondary...

Thanks, Gold. This is only my third batch and I've gone to secondary on the first two but I've been wanting to try a long primary after all I've been reading here lately. Your advice that a secondary just to dry hop isn't really necessary has me thinking I will try it with this batch and just...

    Dry hopping in secondary...

I just brewed my IPA last night and it's sitting down in the basement at perfect temp right now bubbling away happily. I have some hops to dry hop in secondary and I'm curious what the preferred method is here. The LHBS gave me a spare grain sock so I'm assuming that is intended to put the...

    no signs of fermentation yet.

If you type "rdwhahb" into google, the 2nd suggestion is "rdwhahb yoda". Coincidence? I think not. :D

sediment after 4 days bottle conditioning

I don't think sediment really has any bearing on its potential to be a bottle bomb. Sugar is what makes it a bomb, not yeast/hops, etc. Now if that's all sugar at the bottom then you better hit the deck, solider! :D The batch I just bottled had some rather fast sediment too. I think that is...

    Flavoring for my blueberry wheat

Ya, that is a good point...I can always taste test and add more extract if the real fruit doesn't quite bring me where I want to be.

    Flavoring for my blueberry wheat

I've got a wheat ale in primary right now. I told the LHBS that I wanted to do a blueberry wheat (request from SWMBO) and he gave me a wheat ale kit and some blueberry extract/flavoring that gets mixed in just before bottling. Now that I'm approaching a week in primary, I can't decide which...

My first batch in 11 years

You would ask that. I'm not sure. :cross: I couldn't wait any longer and I popped a bottle into the fridge last night. I figured what the hell, I have 50 bottles of it...I'm not going to hurt anything if I drink one early! Plus it will be fun to taste it off and on as it conditions to...

Just cracked my 1st 2 HB beers

OP, I know the feeling of wanting to try your brew to see where it stands! I bottled my first batch, a "Belgian Golden" ale, on Sunday. I took a peek at one of the bottles yesterday. I used mostly brown glass but I had a couple Corona bottles laying around so a few are clear glass. I could...

    It's too d*** hot out!!!

I gently moved my bucket down the stairs so it is all the way down in the basement now. My strip thermometer on the side of the bucket is now reading 68-70 degrees. Nice! It did spend a day or so at higher temps, but hopefully that period of time was short enough to not have much of a...

    It's too d*** hot out!!!

I moved my primary bucket from the 1st floor to the basement when I was home on my lunch. I'll check the temp when I get home tonight and if it's still not low enough I'll give it a bath. Basement is pretty cool right now though so I think it will be okay.

    It's too d*** hot out!!!

Thanks for the advice, guys. I really appreciate it. You've given me some good ideas. This batch has already been warm for 18 hours or so now, so the damage might be done but I will try to get it cooled off and keep this stuff in mind for the future. Thankfully, it's not nearly this hot here...
