    Problems hitting starting gravity

My starting gravity in 70 degree wort from extract recipes is consistently low. For example, I brewed a Hefe last night and starting was supposed to be 1.058 and I came in at 1.046. However, after fermentation my final gravity is always dead on. I would assume that with an extract kit, it is...

So, you are at a non-craft beer place... What do you order?

I love Yuengling. We visit my wife's family in Florida every year and every time we go I drink a ton of Yuengling. I think part of the appeal is that I can't get it here so it's kinda like the forbidden fruit, but I really do enjoy the stuff.

    First brew is dark

I have been trying to decide what I am going to brew tonight and I think I decided on a Hefeweizen. Reading the comments on the hefeweizen kit on northernbrewer.com, a lot of people don't add the LME until there is only 15 minutes left in the boil to keep it lighter. Might be something to keep...

How much airlock bubbling is too much?

Nice, man. That sucker is cranking. You can see bubbles entering the very bottom of the airlock too so you were probably right up against the lid on that. Whether or not the airlock is an accurate gauge of fermentation or not (it's not) isn't really the issue. The issue is that...

My first batch in 11 years

    It's improving nicely with age!

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

My first batch, I didn't cool my wort at all...I just dumped it right into the primary with enough water to bring it up to 5 gallons. I'd estimate I pitched my yeast at somewhere around 110 degrees. THEN, I fermented it in a heatwave in an area that was around 85 degrees. Luckily, it was a...

    Campden

First one has been in bottles for two weeks and fermented a little hot due to my noobness so it's pretty green. Third batch is still in the bucket. 2nd batch, however, was a blueberry wheat and it came out pretty awesome. I had about 8oz left over from bottling and I drank it warm/flat and...

    Campden

It's chloramine, not chlorine. Big difference in terms of brewing, apparently.

    Campden

I'll look into that too. I've always read "if your tap water tastes good, brew with it" and it tastes fine to me but I've also been drinking tap water all my life and am not picky about it at all. But, out of curiosity, I did check the Water Depts website and they use chloramine. I don't know...

    Campden

Three batches under my belt and I just found out that my city water has chloramine in it. I might just switch to bottled water but have been looking into campden tablets as well. When do you put the campden in the water? Should I just fill my bucket and treat the whole 5 gallons at the start...

    Fruit Beer Succulent Strawberry Blonde

I ordered the ingredients for this yesterday and will be brewing it next week. I'm really excited to give this one a go and I think SWMBO is going to love it.

    What causes excessive foaming?

Neat. Might have to try those sometime.

    Establishing a pipeline

Well, my wheat was in primary for 11 days and I landed the same gravity reading the past 3 days (1.010) so I bottled it up tonight. The samples tasted great and I know a wheat is supposed to remain cloudy so I didn't want it to clear up too much. This was SWMBOs request to emulate SeaDogs...

How much beer do you drink daily?

When I was a kid it was illegal to sell alcohol here before noon on Sundays and a couple townies used to do that. Cough syrup, also. Nasty. On topic, I usually drink 1-3 a night.

    semi-flat beer

It needs more time in the bottle. 21 days minimum at 70 degrees. Give it another week and a half or so.

    wheat beer w/ mullberries?

My in-laws have a couple mulberry trees at their house. After reading this, it's terribly tempting to go pick a bunch and do a mulberry wheat. I just bottled a blueberry wheat for SWMBO tonight and it's pretty darn tasty so I'd probably just follow the same recipe. Hmm.

    Show us your SWMBO...

My wife, stepson (6) and daugher (now 7 1/2 weeks, probably about 5 weeks in this pic) A personal favorite of mine. A photo of my stepson taking a photo of us on our wedding day.

    Transporting my brew

Right on, thank ya. I'll try to chill them in the fridge before we go and then pack them upright in some kind of cooler pack so that they'll still be semi-cold when we get there and can start putting them back sooner than later :mug:

    Transporting my brew

I've got a camping trip planned in a few weeks. By then I should have a couple batches that will be ready to drink. Normally, when going camping, you throw a bunch of beer in the cooler, haul it off and you're ready to go. How do you guys transport your bottled brew in situations like this...
