    Another Wyeast activator question

I used a Wyeast Activator over the weekend for a Belgian Witbier and after smacking it, I placed it on a cheap medicinal heating pad (on medium heat) and it began swelling after 30 minutes and was nice and ready after 3 hours...Good way to maintain the temperature to swell properly.

    lower priced ingredient kits

I know Midwest was already mentioned, but I just really enjoy their products. I think their prices are reasonable and they have all of the upgrades for yeast (Wyeast, White Labs, etc). They don't flat rate but shipping hasn't been bad... Home wine making supply and home brew supply available...

Kid Rock to have his own craft beer

Kid Rock to have his own craft beer

I can't stand Kid Rock...I didn't mind him back in 1999 or so, but he is lame now. That song "All Summer Long" makes me want to drive my fist through the radio. What a hack. I hope his beer fails miserably, as I am sure it will. Who gives an F about him? I'd drink swill from a drip tray on any...

    fermenting too cold?

I am a complete noob but I have seen posts of people using space heaters, blankets (since the ferm. temp is higher than the ambient temp.), crafting a box with a light bulb for heating to place the fermenter in, any combination of the aforementioned things, etc... I have a similar problem to...

Star San -- skin contact question?

That is very good to know. I have measured an exact ounce for 5 gallons but usually estimate when using only a gallon or two of water (1/4 ounce, give or take). I guess that does put me at a slight risk then based on this...

    Temperature making me nervous

haha, I am right there with you. I feel your worrying pain. I have been obsessing over my carboy the past few days too. I am using a cheap heating pad from Walgreens currently. My stick-on thermometers are in the mail being shipped with ingredients for a Belgian Wit I am going to fire up next...

Brewing Heater Belt and glass carboys???

Not to drudge up an old topic here or anything, but I was doing searches on heating belts and came across this one. After pacing around annoyed that my house temperature was dipping below 65 in the room I have my carboy (and trying to conserve heating oil), I finally did it. Yep, I slapped a...

    Hello down there!

Siphoned to my secondary (5 gal. glass carboy) yesterday afternoon (7 days after brew day) and the hydrometer reading was 1.020. My target FG is 1.008-1.012. I am going to have it in the secondary for two weeks before bottling. Question: I know the hydrometer is the true measure of fermentation...

    Hello down there!

Thanks everyone! I woke up this morning and had great bubbling action! So, looks like my yeast is doing it's thing. I am feeling pretty good now and off the ledge. I am going to siphon to my carboy secondary next Saturday and give it two more weeks in there before bottling (1-2-3 method). Wish...

    Hello down there!

Hey, its me! Chadwell! Up here on this ledge! So, today was the day...I bought brewing equipment soon after Christmas after over a year of procrastination. It came with an Amber Ale kit. Since the day the kit arrived, it has sat in my house unused while I read How to Brew by Palmer and poured...

to keg or to bottle, that is the question

If you go with kegging to a corny keg, is it better to get a chest freezer as opposed to an old refrigerator (assuming I'd be using the picnic tap and nothing elaborate)? Are any modifications necessary to the chest freezer to keep the beer from freezing or can you set it high enough standardly...

    Hi from Boston!

Thanks Everyone! I-Hop, in response to your post: That is too funny that we got pretty much the same stuff around the same time like this. Also, I listed "Boston" as more of a region...I am actually in Swampscott, not far from you. Definitely let us know how Modern Homebrew Emporium in...
