    Scratch Brewing The Hard Way

Hi there! Allow me to re-introduce myself. Last May I signed on to HBT from our organic farm with the news that we had researched and selected an organic 2 row malting barley and were planning to grow a small trial (maybe a third of an acre plot). Since then I've stayed quiet and spent time...

Is this bad for harvested hops?

Thanks for the tips. I wondered about how tightly I could pack them. Now where did the kids put the flashlight? Your method for estimating alpha is also useful. and taste testing will help me on an individual small batch basis. I'm a long way from "consistency" being the primary goal...

Is this bad for harvested hops?

OK, let me throw something out there. I've started my next brewing project by growing hops and barley on a small scale. The barley is harvested and in the barn. The hops are being harvested and dried. I live on a farm with the opportunity to try this and so I figured I might as well do a...

Wind Bruised Hops. Brew Worthy or Compost?

We rescued our grain from Earl...but the hops had to ride it out. Good suggestion on harvest. I may just sort them into "grades".

Wind Bruised Hops. Brew Worthy or Compost?

Just as my hops were coming into maturity, Hurricane Earl arrived with high/sustained winds. The result is that most of the cones exposed to the wind are now brown where they were bruised by banging into the structure they climb etc. I am harvesting and drying my hops now and I'm...

    Post-Harvest...What Next?

I might wait on soil ammendment until just before/after frost. In general, I try not to spur plants back into growth when I want them to concentrate their energy for dormancy. Others may have success with different ideas.

Growing Hops and Grain for Beer

Yeah, it wouldn't be my first choice for a lot of reasons... I am a certified organic grower, but that isn't for everyone. The labels shouldn't keep you from trying and learning to grow for yourself. When you go for it, I suggest you don't overlook the greener alternatives. They work really...

Growing Hops and Grain for Beer

Hey Bill, Happy to make contact. And great that you are into brewing and into organics on PEI. If you post your contact info to my blog, I can get it without making it public. And no, Miracle Gro is not organic. I assumed Hoppymonkey already had some on hand and would want to use that...

Growing Hops and Grain for Beer

billc68 - I see you are on PEI. So am I. Maybe we could talk? I planted my grain with no heavy tools...just a tractor and s-tine harrows. Harvesting? Well, I'm going to go see an old gent near Charlottetown about a 1950 vintage John Deere 12A Combine. Otherwise, it's me and the kids and some...

Growing Hops and Grain for Beer

What I should have said, is to spray your fish fertilizer (or a diluted solution of miracle gro) directly onto the hop leaves. If you're using miracle gro, I'd want to dilute it to very low strength. Do this application in the morning on a breezy or partly sunny day so you aren't burning the...

Growing Hops and Grain for Beer

Hey Hoppymonkey - I don't know where you are or what your natural soil is like... I can tell you that I planted mine in a slightly acidic soil in a cool maritime climate. I'm no expert, but there is a very helpful hop growing section here in the forum. I planted mine in a mix of...

Growing Hops and Grain for Beer

Hi Friends, I'm a newbie on the forums. Been keeping myself off the board and busy 'till I had something to share that I thought might be of general interest. I'm a certified organic farmer. 2 years ago I planted 6 hops (3 Halertauer and 3 Cascade) which I trained up over over a...

From PEI Canada - How's She Goin' Now?

That chicken manure is POWERFUL stuff! Seems to me I read Vernon used to be a big commercial hop producing area. Any older growers there to talk to? My plants are looking strong but the air is too cool yet. We may catch up this summer though. Couldn't agree more about fresh hops. I...

From PEI Canada - How's She Goin' Now?

Hello again! First year plantings went in the bed in early summer and didn't do very much. Second year, they started fairly early. I kept the weeds away and kept the soil loose. Then foliar sprayed the leaves as the bines developed. They covered a 9 ft pergola pretty well. Good yield from...
