2 different stouts out of one 10 gallon batch

That sounds like one interesting beer!! How much vanilla bean (or extract which is better?) would you recommend for a subtle but present vanilla flavor? Also, do you have any experience adding cacao nibs or coffee and the amounts needed for those?

2 different stouts out of one 10 gallon batch

Thanks for the suggestion I will definitely be using two different strains so I will probably try something like this. Right now the recipe we are using will have an estimated O.G. of 1.065. Would love to not have to make a starter and don't think I can make two. Do you think I could...

2 different stouts out of one 10 gallon batch

I have an immersion chiller, but thanks for the suggestion that certainly would make two very different beers.

2 different stouts out of one 10 gallon batch

Thanks for the suggestions! I think we are narrowing it down to a oak vanilla bourbon stout and either a coffee or chocolate milk stout (we are going to boil the lactose separately and add it to the 5 gallons). How long would you recommend soaking the oak chips in bourbon? Any suggestions on...

2 different stouts out of one 10 gallon batch

A friend and I are joining forces and brewing a 10 gallon batch out of his 15 gallon keggle. We want to try and make two different types of stouts out of the same 10 gallon wort. I am basically looking for some suggestions of two very different types of stouts we could make using different...

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

Thanks for the advice! I looked at Hop Union's Aroma Wheel (https://www.hopunion.com/aroma-wheel/) and it mentions comet imparting grapefruit type aromas/flavors. I might do some more research on that hop as I have never heard of or used it before.

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

I have heard that, cat piss smell, about simcoe and mosaic that's why I was a little skeptical when some mention them as citrus type hops.

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

I'll look into it and see if my LHBS carries it.

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

Thanks for all the responses guys! The actual recipe I'm modifying (posted above if anybody is interested) uses some cascade. Maybe I'll sub out another addition for cascade.. or add another addition at flame out. What about simcoe and amarillo? I've never personally used them but have read...

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

Grainbill: (for 5.5 gallon batch) 8lbs 4 oz 2 Row 12 oz White Wheat 8 oz Crystal 15L 4 oz Cara-Pils Eff: 72% O.G. 1.046 F.G. 1.008 Masking the malt flavor is what I am worried about since this is a blonde ale and I know citra is a pretty potent hop. I...

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

I can understand where you are coming from. I recently brewed a DIPA with citra and galaxy and although the galaxy smelled like grapefruits when I opened the bag, after fermentation the brew smelled and tasted more of peaches and mangos (maybe that has to do with the citra?). Basically what I...

Using citra or galaxy for citrus flavor in a Blonde

I am brewing a Blonde Ale for summer and want to give it a hint of citrus without overpowering the malt and other flavor hops. I was thinking of dry hopping a small amount of citra or galaxy or subbing some of the flavor hop additions with them. Has anyone used citra or galaxy in a blonde...

Looking for feedback on a recipe...

I am no expert in recipe making myself but if you want a higher alcohol % increase the amount of base grains (the 2-row or Maris Otter). As far as the malty flavor, flaked barley, wheat, or cara-pils are occasionally used in this style in small percentages. You could also slightly increase the...
