How many hops are too much?

Lot's of late additions, hop stands, whirlpool hops, dry hops in the FV, dry hops in the keg, hopbacks. I keep it simple on the variety. 1-3 types of hops in a brew. These are all useful tools to get your IPA's punching hard with hop aroma. Personal preference is all over the place so...

Cider beginner and want to know why you guys started brewing?

Cider is fun and simple to get going. Plenty of options to make things more fun and complex as your knowledge and skillset grows. Here is a really dirt-simple way to make a small batch of simple cider. Finishes crisp, and semidry. Great for hot days and is a nice base to experiment with...

Making Scoby from nothing... My experiment

Or you could buy a bottle of kombucha for $4 and have all the microbes you need right there. An ideal solution to meet your needs. Your starter tea. I did this and it worked great. A SCOBY is not needed to get started. I followed this great how-to from @hunter_le five Best of luck.

    Some advice on re-using yeast?

You have a cake of stressed out yeast. I wouldn't think of reusing it. Factors leading to stressed out yeast. High gravity beer. OG 1.083 Huge Under-pitch Uncontrolled temperature of fermentation (no mention of control in your post, apologies if an incorrect assumption) This makes...

    Blichmann's new pump

My thoughts exactly when I saw this earlier today. Hot wort spraying out during priming for sure. Perhaps I'm looking at it wrong. The idea is good, the positioning of it, maybe not so stellar. WTF do I know. Other than that it looks like a great piece of kit. Triclamp on the head is so clever.

    Indoor BIAB

I went plate chiller route as I like the fully contained setup in the kitchen. I just hook it to my kitchen faucet after removing the sprayer. Saves me going out to attach a garden hose. I wanted to go fully indoors. Minimally important I suppose. Plate chillers are prone to blockages so...

    Indoor BIAB

No worries Tommy. Little if anything in the thread is novel or innovative. The elbow allows me to completely drain the BK if desired. Cold break gets in the FV as does hot break. Hop debris is largely contained in the hop spider. Trub in the FV is not a concern of mine. Recent Brew of...

Does matching a water profile with mineral additions also match the PH?

Each calculator uses a different model so different predictions are entirely to be expected. One example as to why that is the case. Each malt that is entered in any given software will vary in the default value of its proton contribution to the mash. The predicted results for pH will vary...

Does matching a water profile with mineral additions also match the PH?

Minerals in the water are one factor which determines mash pH. Bigger factor (much bigger) is the grain-bill. It has much more buffering capacity than the water. Not all malts are alike, one malster's version of a malt will be different to the next. The other factor is water volume. More water...

    Why do I need a 5L flask?

No. I just have the 25mm (1"bar pictured earlier). Works very well for my purposes. Flask was $39 w/ free shipping FWIW. Solid and useful piece of kit.

    Why do I need a 5L flask?

No need for that in my experience.

    Why do I need a 5L flask?

5L flask is useful for when you want to make a 3L or greater sized starter Whether or not you feel a need for that depends on what pitch rate you feel is adequate for your beers. That can depend on many factors, not least of which is a brewer's preference. Other factors in play can...

    Indoor BIAB

Hey Tommy Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you're able to get some use from the thread. Here is a rough out of the mash profile. Essentially a single infusion at 149°F with a gradual loss of heat from the mash over time. Overnight Mash Profile When I got up from bed in the...

    Beersmith strike temp location

164.3F is your calculated strike temp. It's right there in your mash profile. Tun temp may be the same as water temp. Depends on your methodology.

Consistently leaking keg setup... out of ideas.

Take a sequential approach and eliminate sources of leak as you go. 1. Connect reg to CO2 tank. Fully open tank and see if leak happens. If leak address, if no leak proceed to step 2 2: Open valve to allow gas to QD (no manifold, include manifold in next step) If leak address, if no leak...
