Well it's been three days since my first posting on this issue and this is where I stand now:
Gravity: 1.0205 (a decline of .005)
Balling: 5 (same as before)
ABV: 2.5%
The recipe lists the FG as 1.015 and an ABV of 5.7%. I guess I'm going to have to cut my losses with ABV, does anyone know why...
I have 1 1/4 cup of DME (priming) to add to the bottling bucket that came with the brew pack. Does anyone think I should adjust the amount in anyway or stick with the plan?
Also, I will check the gravity for the next two days and see what happens; but does anyone see any issue with going with...
I just opened up my Brooklyn Brown Ale clonebrew that has been sitting in the primary for two weeks. I was planning on bottling this weekend and I took some numbers that are a little off to me. My one rookie mistake was not taking an OG.
The OG listed on the recipe says it would be around...
Also, after reading the replies here and on the sticky about "Primary to Secondary", I have decided to leave the brew alone until this weekend before doing a hydro check and (possibly/hopefully) bottling.
I have my bottles sitting in a cooler of sanitized water at the moment to remove the labels and clean them. I pretty much just add as I drink and change the water every now and then so I will have them ready once it's time to rack 'em. What's the fun in just going to my LHMS and paying for empty...
My first batch I started last Sunday took hours to cool. I underestimated how cold I should make the water that I add to the primary with the boil in it. Took about 4 hours before I could add the yeast and close her up. Next time COLD water all the way!
Thank you all for your input. I just checked my hydrometer tube with some water and it held tight so I think I will use that until I can get a graduated cylinder. I just wanted to double check and see if anyone has used a floating hydro like mine and if they found it to be accurate. My phone...
My first brew, a Brooklyn Brown Ale clone, has now been in the primary for one week. I am going to wait until Tuesday (Day 9) and do a gravity reading. If I am close to the final gravity I believe I will go directly to bottling rather than move to a secondary for my first brew.
What does...
Just stumbled on a recipe that is supposedly a match of Old Fezziwig. Does anyone have experience with this recipe?
20l of unchlorinated water
3kg Dark Malt Extract
900g Dry Dark Malt Extract (DME)
1.3kg Clover Honey
225g Chocolate Malt
225g Crystal Malt (80-L)
225g Black Patent Malt...
Yeah, I haven't really seen many kegs around. Although I have been mostly focused on bottles for the time being. If I see anything around I'll shoot you a message.
My kit has the primary bucket with airlock and a secondary bucket with spigot. To be a good secondary does it need to be in a container with an airlock or do you seal it up for x amount of weeks?
Day 2 of my Brooklyn Brown Ale clonebrew. The yeast had spilled out onto the lid while I was at work. So I rigged a blow off system by sticking the siphon tube into the stem of the airlock leading into a 5 gallon pot of sanitized water.
Unfortunately I didn't get enough liquid out to get an accurate reading. In hindsight I shouldn't have rushed the lid closure. I think I will crack it open again tomorrow to pull out some liquid.
So I started brewing my first batch on Sunday afternoon. I had to swap out the airlock for a blow off from Monday to today (Thurs). The bubbling had slowed down so I went to replace the airlock a little while ago.
As I was pressing in the new airlock the rubber gasket around the hole popped...
