    Basic/beginner water profile question

So what should I be looking for in terms of a basic water profile in order to make a good example of a hoppy American IPA or IIPA? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Basic/beginner water profile question

Wow, thanks for this info! I will read and study what you have written here and hopefully I can start putting this to good use. I'm a little overwhelmed but I'm sure that if I take baby steps I'll start to get the hang of the basics. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Basic/beginner water profile question

I see on the report - Hardness (as CaC03) 122. Is this what you mean? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Basic/beginner water profile question

I am just peeking around the corner and dipping my toe (pardon the pun) into water profiles. I'm absolutely terrified and daunted by it, but believe that learning some basics early on in my brewing hobby will no doubt bring me better results in future batches, when I decide to play around with...

    What's wrong here?

It seems that simplicity is definitely the way forward for my next IPA. When you say to keep it simple, would you suggest just two different malts, perhaps? Is it always best to use 2 row as my base malt or is there a better option? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    What's wrong here?

Yes, I have considered following or making recipes that are a little more simple and then try to build from there. I have only used US-05 in my IPAs and that is a good suggestion to try some different yeast strains. Thanks.

    What's wrong here?

It's hard to put my finger on it. They taste kind of muddled and amateurish. They certainly don't make me say "wow!" that's for sure. It's not that they are a chore to drink but I don't find myself that excited to drink them either! In terms of process, I've mashed at 150F, 152F and 156F. I've...

    What's wrong here?

As a beginner, I have to date, brewed 3 IPAs, a weissbier and a milk stout (I have Jamil's West Coast Blaster fermenting as I write also). I cracked open a weissbier the other night, a little early but I wanted to check one out. I genuinely exclaimed "wow!" when I tasted it. I used to drink my...

    West Coast Blaster

It seems that efficiency value is at 72% but est. efficiency is 84% (the value that cannot be changed) Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    West Coast Blaster

I wanted to try and brew Jamil's West Coast Blaster tomorrow and I got all my ingredients together. When I enter them into Beersmith, I'm getting an est. OG of 1.083 but the recipe says it'll be 1.067. I'm not sure why this is the case. Should I enter my desired OG and then just follow the grain...

    wiessbier floaters

So will this cause any problems or affect the beer negatively? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    wiessbier floaters

Ha! Yes, I've made a few batches now and am totally aware if the gaseous effects! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    wiessbier floaters

Will they have any effect on the beer/flavour or will they break down? Should I still continue to pour it into my glass (when they're carbonated, of course) as is normal with wiessbier?

    wiessbier floaters

I bottled my wiessbier last weekend and took one out last night to give it a little shake (I'm not sure why, I just wanted to look inside!) anyway, I know that they are meant to be cloudy and that shaking it would stir up the yeast inside, but it seemed to have flake like particles suspended in...

    Muddled flavours

I did forget to put the stabiliser in my water last time but I've read on here that lot's of people seem to think that it doesn't work. Is spring water better?

    Muddled flavours

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it's all grain. I assumed that mineral water would be far better to use, but that's not the case?

    Muddled flavours

I cracked open a bottle from my third brewed IPA and after the initial pleasing aroma, I was left disappointed by the muddled flavours. None of my IPAs seem to have a clean, clear and crisp taste to them and all seem to taste 'samey'. What are the main factors that cause this to happen to the...

    Lactose gravity question

Well, that's a relief! I thought my OG was way too low. I am officially now back to being excited about this batch! :D

    Lactose gravity question

I brewed my first Milk Stout this evening and was a bit confused by something that happened - When I punched my recipe into Beersmith it gave me a pre-boil gravity of 1.053 and a pre-boil volume of 5.95 gallons. I ended up with 7 gallons in the kettle with a gravity of 1.046. So, i thought...
