Bottling No. 1 (another thanks for Revvy!)

Thanks! It's fairly clear as it is but I'm hoping it clears up a bit more after bottle conditioning and refrigeration (as it should). I'm also sold on the "leaving it in primary" method for at least a month too (not that I know any different, lol, but I'm all for one less step!).

    Palmer's Lady Liberty Ale?

Well the final gravity pretty much came in right on target for the style (around 1.012) so it must have been close. The sample I had at bottling seemed really good but I'm not sure I would have noticed if I had just used all of both 3lb bags of light DME. The sample was a bit sweet from the...

    Cleaning Tubing/Carboy

Don't fear the foam! Just try and pour as much excess liquid out, the foam is fine. The ph of the wort will render it harmless and it will break down into things the yeast can use as nutriiton.

    Cleaning Tubing/Carboy

I was wondering about this myself as I just bottled my first batch. The fermenter was a no brainer, oxyclean and the brush but I was something at a loss about the auto siphon, Thief and tubing so I just rinsed them all thoroughly with the plan to clean them better before the next use. Does the...

    Just bought my kit :D

Nice! You are also shy a few bottles ounce wise so don't get caught short on bottling day (the kit will make two cases of 12 ounce bottles give or take a few). Don't worry, between now and when it's ready you'll have plenty of time to empty (i.e. drink!) and clean more than a few six packs to...

    Palmer's Lady Liberty Ale?

Hey I just bottled this beer yesteday, can't wait for two to four weeks to pass in order to try it the way it should be. I had a few swallows of it though yesterday and it was quite tasty. I used DME which my LHBS sells in 3lb bags, the conversion is about 5.28 lbs of DME for 6.6 lbs of LME...

Bottling No. 1 (another thanks for Revvy!)

Meant to say it tastes great even flat with a bit of sweet from the priming sugar. It's Palmer's Lady Liberty Pale Ale from "How to Brew" using Chinook as a replacement for the bittering hop, Cascade for flavor as the recipe called for and US-O5 for the yeast. Finally gravity adjusted for...

Bottling No. 1 (another thanks for Revvy!)

Halfway there for the first batch (the dip tube worked great and wand on the spigot worked beautifully!):

Where to get a cheapish 5 gallon pot?

If you have a Sam's Club nearby it might pay to check them out. I bought a commercial grade 16 qt. aluminum stock pot there for about $26 and they have another one which is 24 qt. for around $32, I already wish I had bough the bigger one! These are nice heavy grade aluminum, with walls about...

    American Pale Ale recommendation

Exactly! Still, I still might have been better served to make the recipe as published as a known base line and then tinkered with subsequent batches. I am however looking forward to that Chinook Lady Liberty! ("Lady Liberty with a few Liberties Taken Pale Ale" lol)

    American Pale Ale recommendation

In a week I will be bottling this beer, it was my first attempt at brewing. It's been sitting in the primary for three weeks and is clearing up very nicely. Great to know it's a good recipe, I couldn't resist a little tinkering however, I swapped out the bittering hops for Chinook instead and...

    Using Munich LME

Great! I thought it was probably a mix of pale and Munich but I wasn't sure of the ratio. Thanks!

    Using Munich LME

Munich LME is available from my LHBS. Would it replace an equivalent amount of the actual grain in a AG recipe when converting to extract? For example, if an AG recipe called for 25% of the grain bill to be Munich would you replace 25% of your LME with Munich LME for an extract version?

Help me come up with my 50th Birthday (or my Memorial) 5 year aged Barleywine recipe.

Revvy, I haven't been on this board long and have only brewed two batches so far (and not tasted either one yet) but I have learned an awful lot here thanks in large part to many of your highly informative posts. I'm afraid I haven't any useful input for your barleywine other than the...

    Fermentation Temp

Sounds like you have the perfect room for fermenting in! I have to use a cooler and ice bottles to maintain those temps. here in Florida.

    Favorite Extract Porter recipe???

That's a good one for sure, as I can persoanlly attest, gets better as it ages as well!

    Favorite Extract Porter recipe???

Well I've only brewed one and it's only been in the fermenter since Saturday. It's Palmer's Port O'Palmer Porter fom "How To Brew". Sure smelled good brewing it up. I guess I'll know in five or six weeks! It's supposed to be similar to Sierra Nevada Porter which is one of my favorites. Anyone...

    Name Your Micro

Wow that's a difficult question. It would have to be Sierra Nevada, Great Divide, Smuttynose or Victory. Sierra Nevada just has a great all around line up and more than likely will make up the bulk of my everyday beers. How can you go wrong with any of their beers and Torpedo is an...

What is the deal with new bottle prices?

Great Divide and Boulder Beer both have easy label removal and they use somewhat heavier bottles that are a darker brown. I always save these bottles. Victory has got to have the easiest to clean domestic bottles. Five minutes or so and the label practically slips right of. Most of the German...
