First All Grain Batch - Success!

Tried my first bottle tonight, and I am pleased with the results! The next go around I will have to cold crash this one. It is a wheat recipe, and I figured I'd not cold crash to keep the yeast in suspension. Well there ended up being a lot more that fell out once bottled. I just have to...

    Great craft breweries

I live less than 5 minutes from Upland, and I would not consider them anywhere near elite. They have a few good brews, but nothing to write home about IMO. Their food is better than their beer...

First All Grain Batch - Success!

VTrookie - I agree! I look at micro brews as not only delicious in many cases, but as research or inspiration on what I want to attempt to make. Some of my best ideas are from taking what others have done and nit-picking it to my taste. captainkirk83 - I definitely took me a lot more time...

    False Bottom or Screen?

I just did my first all grain batch today using a false bottom - super easy. I can't speak for the ease of the screen, but most of the people I've seen on here either start with false bottom or go there after to increase efficiency and ease.

First All Grain Batch - Success!

Hey Everyone, I finally made the switch to go all grain - upgraded equipment with some Christmas money. Brewed my first batch today, an American Wheat, and I think I nailed it. Per Beersmith, my estimated OG is 1.053, I measured 1.051. My first runnings measured 1.071 when hot, 1.081 at...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Chocolate Honey Porter

Thanks for sharing! I'm putting this recipe in the hopper for future use :)

    Newbie brewer!

I agree adding the nibs to the secondary. I just cracked open a bottle of my first attempt at a chocolate porter where I added nibs to the secondary and it turned out awesome!

    Clearing the brew

I'd need to hear more about what type of beer this is and the type of yeast used. You mentioned a high gravity, and dark, but beyond that? I'm pretty new to home brewing myself, but one thing I've always heard is to make sure the temp is constant. I'd be nervous leaving it in the garage when...

    Upland inconsistencies

When I first moved to BTown I was up Upland at least once a week after work for a drink or 2. I've since experienced similar events where the favors are inconsistent and just a little off. I have only noticed this when buying bottles at the liquor store. Everything I've had on tap at the brewery...

    Any brew clubs

I'm also interested in finding a brew club near me in Bloomington.

    Where are you at INDIANA

Bloomington here. I've been using Butler winery to get all my ingredients and supplies. Great people, all home brewers themselves. I think their selection has room for improvement, but their online list let's you plan in advance too in case you need to order online.

    Need some advice QUICK!

It is possible to brew without the wort chiller, however it does make the process MUCH easier. After the wort is done boiling you have to be able to cool it down quickly - the wort chiller is one of the most common among home brewers in doing so. There are sites that offer pre-made wort...

    Newb Question from Experiences brewer

My HBSS said there is nothing wrong with doing this. I'm new to brewing myself, but when I was purchasing all the equipment that exact topic came up. The only disadvantage obviously being there's no secondary fermenter.
