What book is on your nightstand? Readers!

I just plowed through the Kingsbridge series by Ken Follett, patiently waiting for the next release in September. I'll check into this one! Currently on Project Hail Mary, it has been a fun read so far.

Are You Your Own Favorite Brewer?

I am, but I also recognize there are many brewers much more talented and dedicated than me. For beers that drink well "fresh" we have an advantage, my first RIS was nearly a drain pour. (too proud to admit it was, in fact, a drain pour) Some of my homebrews have been my absolute favorite, but I...

Crap, I forgot what I did

You got it right, just be careful with the CO2 pressure I am unsure how much pressure those lids can really take. You only need a couple PSI, especially if using gravity to help. I set my regulator before connecting to the fermentor. It'll take a little while to transfer. If you want to be...

    Random Picture Thread

Apparently the excess CO2 has also provided an extra revenue source for breweries who work with the legal pot growers. My guess is this practice is also less taxing on the grid and helps lower the overall cost for both parties. Thanks for sharing!

Built in 1966.. CO2 recovery compressor at a large brewery. (not me in image) I sell compressed air & gas systems world-wide but mainly in the U.S.A.. You might be surprised how much CO2 is bought and used just for transfer and bottling operations. Few places recover and reuse CO2 from...

    Michigan Bell's Homebrew Competition 2021

Better late than never! The text on the Bell's website is White on White background, you have to highlight it to see it for some silly reason. With the changes to the format you could feasibly start today and have additional time to condition your homebrew! Details coming this week via...

    Pinball machines anybody?

That is a super nice lineup! You have some great desirable machines, did you order those Limited Editions or were they picks? I gotta hand it to Stern, they know how to upsell. I worked on Doozie last Sunday and got all of the switches firing.. she needs a LOT of love. The repaired EM's are...

When did craft beer prices “jump the shark”

Well they did name it clown shoes. I don't want a spoon sticking straight up in my beer, personally, but some of that stuff taste good even if I have a hard time calling it BEER. I think when you have +50% puree and adjuncts you have left the realm of beer. It has been found that high...

    Pinball machines anybody?

Because I save so much $$ home brewing, I bought a Pinball machine 🤣 (notice the aging bottles on the floor, imperial stout from December 2020) I just brought this home 2.5 weeks ago, my 1st pin!! 1965 Gottlieb Thoro-Bred, only 1750 made. Simple point system with 6 color-themed switches to...

    Dogs

My wife showed me a video last night of a man jumping into a pond to rescue his pup from a medium size gator... it was already underwater when he jumped in and wrestled it from the gators jaws. SCARY! I have a Brittany (also Daisy), she loves to poke her nose at anything in the yard. Just...

    Disposable oxygen bottles in Maryland

I've heard rumors of CO2 and O2 being in short supply, I was working with a large brewery that is currently reviewing in-house N2 generation in lieu of CO2 for their transfer and bottling process.

    Disposable oxygen bottles in Maryland

Atmospheric air being only about 20% O2 would need more time, but plenty of brewers use it. Tried and True. if you go this route.... definitely use one of the disposable sterile filters 0.2 micron at low pressure. For an air compressor I would even think about replacing it after each use...

Are these hops or have I been taken?

I like to hunt down and identify plants. 4 pedals and 6 stamens looks like you have mustard plants or Yellow Rocketcress IMHO

What are your tips for keeping costs down

Relative to how much you drink, savings could be realized over time, batches still cost roughly $1/Beer for some high quality IPA with 6-ers comparing at 2x price if not more. - Watch your local FB groups & marketplace (I got a grainfather on Southwest Michigan Home Brewers, Refrigerated...

The music that shaped my life.

This is the song that "soothes the beast" in me when I need to reset. Maybe one of the only covers I enjoy more than the original It can flip my mood in less than 2 minutes, Id call that "shaped my life" (Amazing side-note, Jimmy allegedly wrote this song in about as much time as it takes to...

Bell's Official Clone, twice dry hopped in first week, when to transfer to keg?

Interesting hop schedule, I'm even wearing my Bells Official t-shirt today! 2 weeks shouldn't hurt, people leave dry hops in their serving keg for weeks on end. You have to wonder about grassy green flavors though. This might also be a good opportunity to keg-carbonate if you don't mind the...

    Geothermal glycol chiller

@Broken Crow no hijack.. this is the stuff I like to think about and I have the privilege to put this into practice for other processes! The job I have has taught me a lot about heat transfer, gas dynamics, control schemes and has been really fun learning over the past 20 years. Unfortunately I...

    Geothermal glycol chiller

We use plate heat exchangers for both evaporator and condenser, no problem whatsoever. Consider the gas is already expanded when it enters the evaporator and plate selection/design of the evaporator prevents lament flow. Ground temp for condenser use would actually be very nice, we limit water...
