American IPA My 2-time gold winning American IPA

BUMP ... can anyone confirm the Hops in this recipe are just by weight regardless of %AA? ... I am ready to go shopping to brew this Saturday. My question is the Hops quantities all listed as pellets in ounces with no %AA or AAU? Thanks Dan

    Conical Vs Keg fermenter

I got one of these listed as slight damage for around $380 delivered. Didn't see any notable damage and it works great. http://www.ebay.com/itm/301511579311?euid=9f23481b61ef4d32bfcd6d6d8587c2c6&cp=1&exe=11536&ext=28416

    PH Test puzzle

Thanks AJ. The Calcium Carbonate was recommended to raise PH in the mash in one of my old Dave Miller brewing books, it is probably 20 years out of date . A lot has changed since then and the biggest is these great brew sites where you can get immediate feedback and the cutting edge information...

    PH Test puzzle

Thanks Gavin. After reading more reviews on the PH meter I ordered it may not be any good either. I will check the strips today. The good thing is that my Original Gravity was spot on so if I get good tasting beer I think I will keep using the well if not I will fill bottles at a friends who is...

    PH Test puzzle

Kyle ....I missed part of that.......... I am brewing with well water for the first time and am just trying to figure out how to get the PH close enough for the mash conversion so I don't have to haul city water. Thanks again

    PH Test puzzle

Conan ... It was a British IPA. Also as I noted above the test strip read below 5 on the tap water (after I brewed) which was tested 7.0 just a couple weeks ago? I am going to take the test strips to the Brew store today and see what it reads on their water. Thank you

    Water treatment (again)

"I simply have no inclination to bother my local water department for a detailed report"...... FYI when I was on City Water I called the number on the monthly bill and they faxed a copy of detailed water analysis for free in a few minutes

    PH Test puzzle

I ran my first ever 10 gallon batch this weekend with a lot of new equipment and also my first time using well water. I had some good feedback on well water and the best advice was to run my first batch on bottled city water. BUT I really wanted to avoid hauling water on every batch so I went...

How long do you boil for all grain recipe?

My old Dave Miller Brewing books call for a 75 minute boil for the All Grain recipes but I see comments here about a 60 minute boil. Is 60 minutes enough? How long do you boil and how many gallons of water total (Mash and Sparge) do you start with for a 5 gallon recipe? Thanks Dan

    Aeration system

Thanks Gavin, I thought the regulator came with the bottle. I will correct the order.

    Aeration system

Thanks Gavin. Edited: I just went back and read your post 90 seconds................ So if I recall correctly you aerate with pure oxygen for just 15 or 20 seconds right after pitching yeast?

    Using Conical Fermenter Dump Valve

I like it. actually think it may be better upstream of the big valve so you can see what is above the valve and see in the fermenter all the time?

    Using Conical Fermenter Dump Valve

I have a new 12.5 gal Conical with the 1 1/2" Dump valve on a long sweep 90 deg fitting. I want to use the valve to harvest yeast and also to dump the bottom when fermentation slows. Not sure how to do this with any control with the large valve? Thinking maybe an 1 1/2" clear hose with a 2nd...

    Aeration system

I am just getting back in to brewing so my experience is dated by 15 years. I always used an aquarium pump with hose run thru a second hole in the bubbler stopper to an aeration stone at the bottom of the fermenter and it always worked great. As I see it any air that enters the fermenter is the...

Mash Tun selection for 10 Gal Batch

I picked up a 24" X 3/4" Water Heater flex today. So after cutting the ends and removing the tube do you loop this and hook both ends to a tee at the bulk head or plug one end and just run it straight? Thanks Dan

Mash Tun selection for 10 Gal Batch

Thanks Wils, Is 18" long enough? I saw some posts using braided dish washer hose which should be available in 4 or 6' lengths?
