    Hermaphrodite Hop Plants

Definately Hermaphrodite - got a lot of cones off of it.

    Hermaphrodite Hop Plants

Does anyone have any information on what I think is a hermaphrodite hop plant I have? I was just out harvesting the 1st year chinooks and found 2 seed pod clusters in the top 3 feet of the plant. No other plants have them only that one. I am assuming the plant needs to be destroyed and...

are my hops ready to harvest? (pics)

They look ready - can you smell them without breaking them open?

    how dry is dry?

Depending on who you talk to the consensus seems to be between 60% and 80% of original weight. I normally dry 70% to 80% of original weight. IE 10oz of wet hops should weigh 2oz @80% when dry. If they are too dry you will have a lot of cone shatter...too wet and they will mold and mildew. Cheers

    No smell, no fragrance

Sounds like you are a week or two from being ready. Once you start seeing luplin on the outside bracts and you can smell them and they get just a touch of brown on the bracts they should be ready to pick. Cheers

first years with a rash (pictures)

The spider mites will get in the cones and cause them to go brown. You may want to break a few open to see if you have any in the cones. I have a pretty bad infestation of them now and since I have cones I am not going to use any insecticide but a 6% soultion of H2O2 and heavily spray the cones...

    9-59-9

I think your spot on with the fert. Hops increase P uptake during cone production. If your bines are full of burrs then it would seem that "possibly" the cones are robbing the rest of the plant for P. Only suggestion I would have is to use liquid fert...maybe a 10-30-10. I use this on my second...

    Hop Cones Eaten

Evidently its the main component of Sevin that flares the spider mites (carbaryl). Here is a link to the article from the local Entomologist at NC State.http://ncsmallfruitsipm.blogspot.com/2010/06/hops-in-southeast-learning-experience.html She mentions it in an article about Jap Beetle control.

    Hop Cones Eaten

If the cones are damaged I would remove them...depending on the dmg most never recover. I wouldnt use Sevin (it will flare spider mites). An insecticidal soap is fine to use on cones....however once bugs get in the cones its next to impossible to get them out. I would cut off the dmged cones and...

    Heat Damages Hops???

Have you sprayed them with anything recently? It kind of looks like Verticillium Wilt. Check here - http://plant-disease.ippc.orst.edu/disease.cfm?RecordID=604

    Nutrition problem

On pic 2 -id leave it and spray it with the fert. If it gets any rust color to leaf then you still have spider mites and youll need to address those. If the mites are gone then the leaf should return to a more deep natural looking green with no speckles. On pics 3 and 4 I would trim them off...

    Nutrition problem

Pic 1 - no idea (what did you use to treat the spider mites and aphids and what was the temp when you treated them?) Pic 2 - without seeing the underside of the leaf - that looks very much liike spider mite dmg. It could also be early downy mildew, but my bet would go to spider mites. Pic...

    When to pick?

Yes and no - I am doing test runs on a "dual harvest" Some of them I did cut back...others I didnt. Ill be comparing quality and quantity by end of season. So far it looks like Ill easily be able to get 2 full harvests during our season here. My nuggets (control) have never seen fert or water...

    When to pick?

Sounds to me like they are ready by what you posted. I am in TN and have allready harvested my cascades and nuggets...back during the first of June. Our growing season starts on March 1st, I assume since you are in GA your growing season starts at least by that time or sooner. I have cones on my...

first years with a rash (pictures)

There are several insecticidal soaps for spider mites ...however you need to spray often (follow directions on label) and remove heavily infected leaves. Took me about a week and a half to get rid of mine. Cheers

Just a note on the Sevin - according to this article - Sevin has the potential to flare Spider Mites. Article Quote below: Cheers

Some of that looks like spider mite dmg - have you checked the underside of those leaves? I would prune them and then prune on up the bine quite a ways...at least a foot or two. Cheers
