    Clay heavy soil

Here in TN - they dont call it big orange country for nothing. The entire state is made up of orange clay and its deep. I can only tell you what I have done to ammend the clay. First get a small excavator and trench out your planting area to 2 feet deep or more by 3 feet wide. Second...

Cut back first hop shoots? Or wait and cut back all but best 3?

I have been researching this question for some time now and the only reasons that I can find for cutting back the first shoots are 1. Control Harvest timing 2. Belief that this practice will have a positive effect on harvest results Notes - This practice seems to be confined to the PNW /...

I was told not to use Zeal by NC state ag people as it does not kill the mite eggs. They instead tell me to use Acrimite.

Yes foilar feeding is good. Hops love it...but you should not do so in replacement of a good root feeding.

    Hops Life Expectancy

Keep them moist with non chlorinated water...creek/river/bottled water and I would not reccomend over a week. If you must keep them in the fridge for over a week...wash them every other day with non chlorinated water. Molds and diseases will settle in on them. Best to put them in the ground...

    Need a few trellis ideas.

This is the Maypole design I am using. It will accomodate 24 plants. OD is 15' x 27' The base pole there is a 4x6 concreted in to 3'. Ill bolt another pole to it for height. All strings run from that central pole. I have landscaping cloth and a drip system that will go in once I have...

how much yield happens in the first season

I am not so certain location makes as much difference as most would suggest allthough it definately does make a difference. First year plants are always a gamble and from my experience yeild is going to greatly depend on 1.Available sunlight 2.Soil PH 3.Fertilization (go heavy to very...

    New Hop Beds

It got up to 72 here in eastern Tn Sunday so I started working the new transplant beds to try and get a bit ahead. I have 10 more to go but they dont take too long to get ready (about 3 a day). I am moving to a maypole design to hopefully increase the amount of plants per acre and (hopefully) a...

    Hops - Moving House

Cut it back to about 2 or 3 feet of bine. yeah it will stunt it a bit but it should be fine by the end of the season. Make certain that the 2 or 3 feet that are left have plenty of leaves and or sidearm growth. You should be fine. Cheers

If your curious about how the different varieites perform in this area (TN VA NC) I just finished posting my harvesting results for all my varieities except for the Cascades which were destroyed and will be replanted this year from fresh stock. http://research.hopgardens.com/?page_id=154...

    Growing hops in VA

You should be good with most varieties. I am in TN about 30 min from the VA border. I have 11 varieities that I grow here and all of them do pretty well especially the nugget, chinook and brewers gold. I also get a true dual harvest as well. The plants start coming up on or about March 8 and are...

    Hop Harvest Porn

Just thought I would share this. Started a new fert schedule late this year and got some nice results from 1st year nuggets. The top 6' of both plants we tried the new fert schedule on were full of these at every node.

Spider Mites or powdery mildew? (pics)

It is neither Spider mite nor Powdery mildew... not sure what it is but looks like catterpillar nests of sorts.

are my hops ready to harvest? (pics)

The spider mites are back here as well with a fury. The recent rains have done more to help than anything else. I have used everything but the big pesticides. I am hitting them with H2o2 (6%) and harvesting as fast as I can. I know there will be many that arnt ready...but I dont see that there...

    Damn caterpillars.

It looks like an Eastern Comma or " Hop Merchant". They are very destructive to hop plants here in the south. I had an entire plant completely stripped of leaves in an 8 hour time period. I spray with Bt which works well against them. I dont think you need to prune...however hitting them with...
