No Chill Results Thread - Post your good or bad notes here.

I've got a fairly hoppy no chill ale on tap now and it tastes fine, looks good. I'm currently using mostly Centennial or NB for the bittering hops and use a bit less than I do with the chiller, as to my taste it seems I get more bittering with a given amount in no chill than I do with the same...

    beer cheese recipe anyone?

Veng.... We make a goat milk feta and blending a bit of that in works well. Our Super Bowl version of the beer cheese recipe is to eliminate the wine and double everything else (2 bottles of beer, 2 lbs of cheese, etc) PLUS 3/4 cup of your favorite salsa. We also like a beer salad dressing...

    beer cheese recipe anyone?

In case anyone else is interested, here's our beer cheese recipe: 1 bottle homebrew set at room temp until flat. I like an amber or Irish red not too heavy on hops (variation: if you like a bit of wine flavor, which we do, make it 3/4 bottle homebrew and about 4 oz red wine) 1 lb extra sharp...

    First Year Cones?

Amazing... first to post has 8 foot bines. Then comes someone with 12 footers. Next guy has 18 feet, followed by Major Tom who tells us his are close to 20 foot tall. If this continues we're sure to hear from Jack.

    No Chill Case Study

Well said, Fatgodzilla. It was Thirsty Boy from your Aussie forum who convinced me to try slowchill a year ago and I've thanked him since. Hops additions take some adjustment, but the method works fine. Hal, though, who posted the original on this thread, has been pretty much ignored. I for...

    No Chill Experiment

I'd submit that no chill was done years ago. Anyone wanting to read a lot more about it can do so on the Aussie Home Brew forum. And thanks, Pol. I had a glass (OK, two) of no chill last night . . . . the timing of hops additions you suggested worked quite well.

    No Chill Experiment

For those with containers on back order from US plastics, I talked to them yesterday and was told they have plenty of cubes--they're out of lids. Lids due in Friday or Monday. I'll be watching the gxm experiment (fwiw I did 5 or 6 no chill batches last summer but without a suitable cube...

Lets talk technique to brew the perfect Light American Lager.

Gila... you're a more advanced brewer than I, but I have made a few batches using 6 lb two-row, 2 lbs cracked field corn (livestock feed with a cereal mash) and 1 lb cooked rice and it turns out nice--it takes a while in the keg to get crystal clear, but I don't use a clarifier. I tried it...

Does spent grain make good chicken feed?

the "double-yolker" comment was just a yolk. sorry.

    Any historical beer recipes?

nq3x or other beer historian... I'm doing an article for a local paper on a brewery built in 1870 in Montgomery County, IA. by a man Charles Steinbrecher. By 1880 he was converting about 3,000 bushel of barley a near. Business was good, but the anti-saloon movement came to town and the...

Does spent grain make good chicken feed?

Our chickens crowd the fence on brew day. I wouldn't feed 'em the hops, but the barley produces double-yolkers.

    Sparge SLOWLY!

Might the length of sparge have to do with the amount of sweetness remaining after the desired volume has been drawn off? For me that is sometimes a problem. I get decent efficiency, but with some 10lb grain bills I note a gravity of 1.015 or a bit higher in the last runnings. The sugar is...

Where do you get your grain (online)?

It's called Cornhusker Beverage & Bridal, 8510 K Street (I-80 to 84th, south to K, west a block). Strange place... Mostly a liquor store and I didn't see much for bridal stuff. The Homebrew is in a side room. Decent selection, including the $37.50 two-row. There's another HBS about a block...

Where do you get your grain (online)?

Where in Nebr are you? I picked up 50 lb bags of 2-row in Omaha last week for $37.50 (and they had a stack of it).

What do you do with your spent grains?

Like boodlemania, I feed them to cattle. My tax guy says they then qualify as livestock feed and can be deducted, but I haven't gone that far. (And if I had I wouldn't admit it here).

    Dry Hopping Advice

As I read this it seems some just put the hops bag in the cornie. My question is doesn't that plug the out tube? I tried the floss deal and couldn't get a decent seal and would rather let a bag of leaves float if it wouldn't plug things up.

    Hops Direct

I'd bet the 22 oz pounds from Hops Direct are a thing of the past. Received three pounds last week. Package included, each weighed 17 to 17.5 oz. Good price, though, prompt, shipping was actual UPS cost.
