Home brewing saves you money? HAHAH!

I don't know, seems to my calculations that I am saving money. I've spent about $530 on equipment and kegs. My batch costs are about $24 for about 54 beers, that I really like. Six packs of beer I like average about $10, so I am 'saving' $66 per batch. I've 'saved' over $500 this Spring alone...

How to properly carbonate a Corny Keg

I have done this for my hoppy pale ale that get's raves from my hop head friends. My BIPA and IPA also come out well. I am not sure what the science behind aroma dimishing would be. I don't brew enough to keep up with demand so I usually go from boil to glass as quick as I can.

How to properly carbonate a Corny Keg

I'm sure this will catch flak but I chill my kegs overnight (at least 12 hours). Set CO2 at 20psi and shake for 5 minutes. Reset pressure to 10 psi and serve. If it is too carbed, I shut off the gas and open the tap for a pint or so. I repeat as needed. Simple and easy and has worked...

I went "pro" - What it actually takes to do so

It was cool to meet you after reading this thread. Finally got to try your beers without a drive down to Norton. I'm glad to have met you in person. FYI - I work for Clown Shoes doing these fests. This was a good one. Busy and a lot of good "cheer".

    House Rules for Brewing

I totally agree about having some "samples" of previous brews during the brew process. The wort needs to have a model of the goodness it will eventually be.

    Leaving CO2 tank on

One point about your testing underwater, depending on your set up, your hoses and such could twist in such a way to open a very small leak around one of the barbs in the keggerator. I turn off my gas when not in use (usually). My piece of mind and the Murphy's law experience that when I need to...

    Samuel Adams IPL

While it is a bit annoying that here in MA Sam is jumping in on a style that Jack's Abby kicked off, it also means a broadening of the style and educating more people to the style. They'll try Sam's version and then when they run across Jack's Abby, they'll give a try and realize the total...

How do you pick what to brew next?

I've been working on getting a stable of eight or nine beers that I can do well. Tweaking the ingredients and such. Of course, the last few days, I've been looking for something different so I decided to do one of my favorite styles - milk stout. I'm waiting for the temperature to get warmer so...

    Is it safe to brew?

The whole point of the boil is to kill every living organism in the brew. The duck pond beer mentioned earliers was an experiment at University of California, Berkley (IIRC - I was drinking during the "How Beer Saved the World" movie, where they showed and discussed the experiment) - that had...

I'm pouring for my employer (I do fest work and tastings for them, not brewing). So I'll be there for Friday night and Saturday day sessions.

    keg disappointment

My first keg experience had me wanting to break down because I couldn't figure out why the couplers didn't want to go on. I didn't make it to the hammer but I certainly had pliers and screwdrivers working. Of course, I felt like an idiot, when I pulled up a video on kegs and realized the posts...

    Mistakes. Read one, leave one.

Before I picked up an autosiphon, I was trying to get my siphon going to transfer to the bottling bucket. I used water to start it but it didn't work so I ended up sucking to start the suction. I wasn't paying attention and got a mouthful of beer, I panicked and spat into the bottling bucket...

    All grain with no cooler

Not sure the hesitation on the mash tun cooler. In terms of expense, I made mine for less than $100. In terms of ability, I am the least handy person you could possibly meet (trust me, I am challenged to hang pictures on nails) and I simply watched the Maine Homebrewer's video a couple times and...

    Suggestion for IPA extract recipe?

Are you looking for fruity as in orange/grapefruit from the hops or something more Belgian-style from the yeast? Here is my IPA that came out with a lot of grapefruit notes. It comes in at over 80 IBUs (83.91 or so). 1 lb UK Pale 2-Row grain (pre-boil for 30 minutes at 154 degrees) 1 lb...

figuring mash temps for a system

I've used this calculator and been spot on every time (well, excepting that one time my digital thermometer broke and gave me a reading higher than my strike water temp - but again, my thermometer broke so I discount that time). http://www.brewersfriend.com/mash/
