BEst to start by taking a soil sample and sending it for analysis to your state college soils lab. This will give you a jumping off point and recommendations on how to ammend your soil for your hops. Also, looks like a nice choice for yourarea...

How to help hops beat the heat?

All you can do is keep them watered... We just got our drip irrigation in and attached a 300 gallon water buffalo to the line. Takes ~6 hours to empty but the plants seem happier.

Rudds... Check out the UVM Plant & Soils site. The past two years they have hosted a Hops Conference in early March. They started a hopyard and have had some very good speakers the last two years. I'm ramping up do do something similar for next spring (in negotiations with a landowner now)...

    How many rhizomes per "hole"

We did ours 1 per hill 36" apart and it seemed to work out nicely. That was last year and this year we just trimmed them back and got them climbing up the twine. We also planted them late last year on the 4th of July. They're looking great this year. Will post some pics soon.

    Left with rotten sticks...

Last year we put ~400 directly into the ground and I'd say we had a 95% success. This year out of 100 rhizomes planted only 2 crowns so far... Oh well, that's farming. Still going to call the distributer...

    German Purity Laws

T he story of how hopped beer came to replace gruited ale is a complex and convoluted one, with origins in both the Protestant Reformation and the Industrial Revolution. An anti-gruit campaign, similar in scope and absurdity to our contemporary War On Drugs, fed off the anti-clerical and...

    Left with rotten sticks...

thanks LabRat... I'm going to try this and see where it leads. Did youo put the clipping directly into potting soil or just in water until roots satrted forming? I have access to plenty of clippings and might try both methods if time allows.

    Left with rotten sticks...

Well I had the best intentions and planted 16-20 rhizomes in 11 pots three weeks ago in a great growing medium and now I have a bunch of pots w/ rotten sticks in them... That's the bad news... As for good news our 2nd year crop is taking off phenominally. My question... Has anybody taken...

    Cold plate mounted in fridge?!?

Had the crazy idea today of mounting a coldplate exchanger in the back of my fridge and running a couple of tap lines from outside in and putting a perlick or two on the side of the fridge. Has anybody tried this and what were your results? Seems like it would save on running another fridge as...
