    food grade silicone

There are risks involved if the Ethyltriacetoxysilane and Methyltriacetoxysilane aren't fully hydrolyzed, but as they hydrolyze quickly, the risks are low. After reviewing the 21CFR177.2600 of the Code of Federal Regulations, I believe it's safe to repeatedly use FDA approved silicones on...

    food grade silicone

Upon further research, Ethyltriacetoxysilane and Methyltriacetoxysilane seem to be slight variations of some of the precursors to silicone which cause cross-links in the polymer that enable it to vulcanize when exposed to the moisture in the air at room temperature; hence room-temperature...

I would also agree that the risk is low, but people should be aware of it.

Not True. Dow Corning 732 contains 1-5% Ethyltriacetoxysilane and 1-5% Methyltriacetoxysilane.

    Simple electric brewing??

I would argue that an insulated brew kettle with a heating element mounted inside is more efficient than an induction burner; in fact, it's probably close to 100%. Also, few people want to invest in ferromagnetic pots, let alone an induction burner just for brewing. But if you already own an...

    Simple electric brewing??

All of the "control systems" are DIY projects, though some look store bought. You'll have to make your own control panel, which can be as simple or as complex as you want. Spend a few weeks reading through the threads here and plan your system. You might find someone with a system that is...

Food Grade Silicone O rings (Where to buy Retail)

I see there is a Grainger in Roswell. They would probably have them, but I doubt if you save much money. And you may have to purchase them in bulk.

    Simple electric brewing??

Kal's build is a must read. It will provide you with links to everything you will need. But his build is on the high end, both price wise and quality. There are many ways to accomplish the same thing, and many builds are documented and discussed on the forums. The main thing to take away...

    food grade silicone

The problem is that you're not applying 100% silicone. In order to make silicone liquid, some sort of volatile compound must be added. It's the VOC's that may be dangerous, and different manufacturers use different compounds for each line of products. Much of the compound is released into the...

Greenlee Knockout Punch to Lend - 1-1/4"

So far, things have been going really well with lending my Greenlee. People on the forums seem to be very polite and responsible. Though I haven't had any problems, all I ask is that you know how to correctly use the tool and you somehow reimburse me for shipping. Thanks!

Anyone want to rent or sell an 1-1/4in and 13/16 round punch tool?

Here's a thread I posted offering to lend my Greenlee. All I ask is that you reimburse me for shipping somehow. I can't keep paying $8 to lend it to people.

    food grade silicone

Check the MSDS and see if you want to consume the chemicals in the product. I know there are some "food safe" sealants discussed on the forums, but I'm hesitant to reccomend any. In fact, I see no reason to use silicone sealant on a food contact surface when there are better ways to accomplish...

    10 or 20 Gal Boilermakers

I've been watching the the Brewhemoth conical thread, and I'm planning to purchase one when they work out the new temperature control system. Since they are a 22 gallon capacity for a super reasonable price ($430), I'm extra glad that I purchased the 20 gallon kettles. It's possible to ferment...

    10 or 20 Gal Boilermakers

I use the 20 gal models in my electric brew rig. I am glad that I went with the 20's. If you're already making this large of an investment, you might as well go big. I have successfully brewed 5 gallon batches in the 20 gal kettles, though I usually put about 5.5 gallons in the fermenter. Be...

Just built my 1500 watt heatstick!

I disagree. For instance, DAP Silicone Sealant 08648 requires no medical attention if ingested and contains far fewer chemicals than the CR Lawrence Industrial RTV Silicone. So, to suggest that one simply hasn't sought FDA approval is a dangerously false assumption; as is assuming that it is...

Just built my 1500 watt heatstick!

According to the manufacturer's MSDS, it is toxic. I would not recommend it's use in food preparation. From the MSDS regarding ingestion: "Get medical attention immediately." Maybe it's less harmful when cured, but I would not risk it when there are food safe silicone sealants available.

Embedded Control Concepts has a really great forum that has helped me tremendously. Check out this thread, you just may be in luck.

    XLR connectors waterproof?

They most definitely are NOT waterproof. I would only use them at the control panel (and I do). Why are you using the connector IN the mash tun? You might look at M8 connectors which are, at the very least, highly water resistant. Derrin put those on my temp probe cables and I love them.

    BCS temp probe wiring

I got the exact same cable from Derrin a while back. At first, I was pretty angry because I had waited SO long for this cable to arrive (apparently, Derrin was out of M8 connectors) and it was the wrong cable. On a whim, I decided to hook up two of the three cables, blue and brown. It...
