    Corded drill for grain mill

How does that work, actually? How does the speed of the mill affect the gap setting?

    Corded drill for grain mill

I use a Sears Craftsman 1/2" corded drill, variable speed with a 6 amp motor. You can get them for about $63 these days. It powers my Monster Mill 2 Pro at full speed. Things got a little dicey when I milled 100% wheat one day, but...it made it through. Don't ever mill 100% wheat if you can...

why the poor post boil efficiency here?

That's not really true. I get a 96% mash efficiency but 75%-80% brewhouse efficiency. I lose a lot of wort to my vessel deadspaces and tubing and whatnot.

advice on where to drill into the back of this freezer for kegerator conversion

Get a scrap piece of metal conduit and a propane torch and a water spray bottle. From the inside of the freezer, heat up an end of the conduit until it's hot and then apply to the inside plastic of the freezer until you melt a hole through the inside plastic liner. Keep the spray bottle handy...

why the poor post boil efficiency here?

We can't assess unless you post numbers about your pre-boil wort.

Once my pH meter is calibrated, do I...

I sure hope not. If you do, then your meter is pretty awful or needs a sensor replacement. Scientists like to check it every time because their job demands such high accuracy. For homebrewing...not so much. But if you will worry about your readings if you only calibrate once at the...

Who Brews 5 Gal Batches in ~20 Gal Pot

I have 25 gallon pots and the smallest batches I can do are 7 gallon batches because I have an electric heating element in the bottom of my BK and it needs to stay submerged or else it will fry. 7 gallons is the smallest volume that will give me pretty much guaranteed coverage of the element...

    On forum etiquette and "Likes."

Eh. People like positive feedback, as long as they feel it's sincere. Yeah, you're right about that dick thing.

Your Budweiser is actually 100 years old...[video]

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that they didn't do genetic testing on their strains going all the way back to the 1800's to verify that there were no mutations. It's possible that they had some yeast samples from the 1800's and once they started using advanced testing THEN they could say with certainty...

    On forum etiquette and "Likes."

Some people just pepper threads with likes for everyone that responds to them, so that really diminishes the importance of them. All I know is that I'm winning.

Need help with HERMS mash please

I'm really not understanding the need for three burners with a HERMS rig. Do you use the MLT burner while the mash is taking place? Or is the third burner just to heat up the strike water? Thin AND dry means that you're getting more attenuation than you're normally used to. The enzymes in...

Any fans of the SciFi series "FireFly"?

The phases of Firefly fandom: 1) "My friend told me I must watch this show. Fine. I'll watch an episode just to shut him up." 2) "Holy crap! This show is great! I can't wait to watch the rest of the series!" 3) "What?! There was only one half-season?! What a crock!" 4) "THERE'S A...

So I made a rookie mistake, would like some advice

If you're chilling for 40 minutes and it's still not down to pitching temp... I know it's personal preference and all, but if it were my setup I'd work on getting a better chiller.

    Reverse Dough-in

I did specify mash efficiency, not brewhouse efficiency.

    Reverse Dough-in

Can't say for sure how much just underletting affects mash efficiency, but I can say that I do on occasion get 96% mash efficiency and I do the underletting thing all the time. Mash pH and grain crush affects efficiency way more than how to mix the grains and water together, as far as I can...

    Heingunitas? Laneken?

They'll make money by selling Lagunitas beers in foreign markets. I really don't think that Lagunitas would go into this if it meant that they had to change their beers in any way. Lagunitas is making money hand over fist and they didn't need a partner to grow moderately. This move is just a...

Problem with Boiling in a Tall thin pot?

Well, no, not really. Tall, thin pots have less surface area, and that means you'll have less water evaporation than a fat wide pot. I suppose fat wide pots are somewhat easier to clean. Would it be easier to whirlpool in a fat wide pot than a skinny tall one? Um...I guess so? I've never...
