    Pitching on a yeast cake

Don't worry about sanitizing, the beer you just siphoned off was in a sanitized carboy. I would do this as soon as possible after you siphion off the first beer though. I recently tried this for the first time and the results were great. I brewed a Cream Ale and then put a Brown Ale on top of...

    SUBTLE citrus hop

I just finished off a keg of Wheat that I dry hopped with cascades .5 oz to be exact. and it was wonderful, and had the grapfruit flavor that cascades are known for I will be sure to brew this one again I also use dcascades for the flavor hop and Hallertau for bittering

    Drank my first brew

Sorry guys I just couldn't wait, I just tried my latest brew right out of the primary, I was racking it out to the secondary and had to sample it, even that was great, can't wait till it's done and carbonated. This hobby has the best rewards you can imagine. I'm not bragging here, it's...

    Banana Flavors in Hefeweizen

As was said before, banana flavors are more prominent at higher temps. I'd say around 70 f or so. and yes they do fade somewhat with age. But if you are really put off by it then just send it to me and I'll drink it for you. LOL. The reason I"m not brewing a Hefe right now is my basement is too...

    Old Malt Extract

Guess I was lucky then and I'll remember that in the future. However I have progressed and I won't be using any spoiled LME again, I use only all grain now. I have also realized ( no brainer really) that you should always use the freshest of ingredients in your brew.

    Siphoning with the Carboy Cap

I'm, sorry I didn't mean that it would be cheaper, it just worked out that way for me, I felt it was more sanitary though. and an option if you have the resources.

    Old Malt Extract

Well it was minmal but still yes they weren't what you would call fresh. ( I got what I thought was a good deal on them, at the time I was new to this ). But I don't see where I was all that lucky, after boiling for some time if it did have anything in it I would have killed it at 212 + for...

    Siphoning with the Carboy Cap

I have been using a similar method for some time now, my exceptions are that I have used a two holed stopper ( instead of a cap) and I use a vacuum pump and a small air compresser instead of mouth power. (depending on direction of flow) The air compressor is a medical unit 110V and the vacuum...

    Old Malt Extract

I made a brew one time out of old extract ( the cans were bulging a bit ) and it was horrible, I threw it away . No you couldn't stand to drink it either. So I'd make sure the cans are not swollen, then I'd presume they would be ok. I don't know about the bags..

    Brewstand build

Your stand is blue and I am green, with envy . I have one question though, just what is the over all height of this rig?? Do you need a ladder??

    Recirculating..

Heh, you know, what ever floats your boat. but I still think you guys are over thinking this thing. All you have to do is gently pour the stuff back on the grain bed, no dumping now. Remember you should have "some" liquid above the grain bed anyway.

    Recirculating..

Heh Brewsmith , don't worry about the wheat . I have used up to 5.5 lbs but I also used 1lbs of rice hulls ( when I buy the wheat malt at the local HBS they give me 1 lbs of rice hulls ) they are cheap anyway even if you have to buy them . Just mix them well through out the grain bed and mash...

    Recirculating..

I agree with Lost I collect it in a small pitcher about a qt or so and just pour it back slowly directly on top of the grain bed. and I've stired it too I've never had a problem and I have never had a stuck sparge ( even with Wheat). Are you sure you are not overly worrying about this ?? It...

    I wish I hadn't discovered homebrewing...

You guys are what I needed, I thought perhaps it would take some form of therapy to straighten me out. You see I was convinced I was the only one who discovered Homebrewing, and then put my life (seemingly ) on hold. I too think of nothing but homebrewing. The one thing it has done however is...

    bleach in homebrewing

I used Bleach the first couple of times I brewed, (After reading Charlies book), Ruined two batches and decided there and then that the bleach should stay in the laudry area of the basement and NOT around anything to do with brewing. I use Iodophor for sanitizing and Oxy Clean for cleaning( it...

    Flip top bottles-can you reseal?

I am sorry, the original Post DID say "Grolsch style", and yes we do like to express ourselves, sometimes after a hombrew at that .:mug:

    Flip top bottles-can you reseal?

1 liter bottles from Grolsch?? Cool I've never seen one. At least that I remember. ( getting long in the tooth here). But that does make a difference my apologies. I was wondering how you would split a 16 oz bottle three ways and still call it a glass. But I have strayed form the original...

    Flip top bottles-can you reseal?

Ditto, the Grolsch bottles I have are 16 oz and IMHO that is one beer. As a matter of fact I want to know who ever started this 12 oz thing? I really believe a beer should be a pint.

    Leaf Hop Absorption

I agree, I usually run 6.5 to 7 gal of wort in the kettle as a pre boil amount and end up with around 5.5 or so in the fermenter. Take out the trub and I have my 5 gal or so. It depends on the yeast how much I lose in the fermenter. I have never tried to pin point it in Promash though I probably...

    Product warning

Perhaps my heading was wrong, the product worked just fine. Yes it is from Genuine Innovations, and It could have been a weak ball lock fitting. However if it happened to me it can happen to you, I would advise not to trigger the co2 into the ball lock prior to putting the ball lock fitting...
