Sounds like that mystery guy (Mr. Whateverhisnameis) should really make friends with a guy with a barrel...yknow like a new charred 5G oak keg thatll come in soon, like later this month perhaps. Hypothetically of course, purely an academic exercise :D

It sounds like you might have been planning a more neutral spirit to age, but if you're into cocktails, I can't recommend barrels enough. I've got a 2L barrel I've been using exclusively for aging cocktails and boy howdy are they delicious. If it's something you're into, give this guy's barrel...

    House Party / Need recommendations

You could probably swing Yoop's stout in that time if you wanted it on tap. Calculated ABV on that one is only ~4.7%. Sounds like you've about got your lineup though. If you've got 10 apple trees I certainly hope cider is in your future :p

We're having a get together later in the fall too, complete with pulled pork. I'll have two on tap via a jockey box, one of which will be an Oktoberfest, so that gets my vote for sure since it should appeal to beer enthusiasts and the "meh" crowd. The rest depends entirely on your audience. Are...

    Blending Bourbons in a Barrel

Wow time sure does fly... Just wanted to give a quick update on this in case anyone else was thinking about trying it too. I went with a small 2L barrel. 75% was John E Fitzgerald Larceny and 25% was Bulleit (had on hand so I went with it), aged for about 30 days. Both bourbons are tasty...

    Stuck in Homebrewing Rut

I haven't gotten into a rut with this hobby (yet), but have with others. Normally I take a break and don't force myself to do it for a while. Usually after a few days/weeks/months I'll get back into it wondering how I was ever in a rut in the first place. YMMV.

Your username is forcing me to ask a stupid question; you wouldn't happen to be from Altoona PA originally would you?

Hey guys just popping in to meet some other Columbia area brewers. If anyone wants to refill their tank instead of swapping, I know Pye Barker Fire in Irmo will refill them for you. The only bummer is they don't do it while you wait, you'll have to drop it off but they'll usually have it ready...

    Blending Bourbons in a Barrel

My understanding was adding bourbon (or any spirit) to a barrel for aging would mellow it out and improve the flavor with time up to a point. For example, the link below does it and allegedly take a good bourbon and makes it great after some time in the barrel...

    Blending Bourbons in a Barrel

Hey thanks man! Yeah that's right, I'm going to add bourbon (whatever kind(s) I settle on), let it age until it tastes right (planning on 20-30 days or so but I'll taste every few to see if it's good), then bottle into two bottles: one will be consumed reasonably quickly and the other will age...

    Blending Bourbons in a Barrel

Hey guys, long time no post, obligatory excuses about being busy and what not My wife and I are expecting our first kid in mid-November, so to commemorate the occasion (and to ensure wife has tasty liquor available after what I hear is a fairly painful ordeal) I bought a 2 liter oak barrel...

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

Maybe bring some plain water to a boil in the keggle and give it a taste when it cools?

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

I haven't read the whole thread so you may have answered this, but has any part of your system been welded together? You mentioned a metallic taste and feel pretty confident that water isn't the culprit. Is the gray residue common in keggles? I don't use one so I don't know but that doesn't...

Ping-Pong ball dry hop in keg?

I think the difference is temperature of the beer. I recently dryhopped a beer for 5 days in the carboy at room temp and it does have a good bit of a grassy flavor. But, I have done dryhopping in the refrigerated kegs for the life of the beer and it never got to that point. YMMV

    Moving to Lexington, SC

The Hopyard shut down because the owner's wife/girlfriend had a kid. It's too bad too, he had a great setup and is very knowledgeable. As I understand it he's still the brewer at the brew pub and id opening up a brewery with someone else in Columbia...Cotton Town is the name I believe. There...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you finally kick your first keg of homebrew and become more emotionally confused than you ever have been in your life. Should I be happy, sad, reflective, angry? I didn't even get a picture of the crystal clear Pilsner goodness before it went. ...and you have a pint of something else in...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you can remember what beer is on all four taps in your keezer without any labeling whatsoever, but you can't remember what you just read two seconds ago. To be fair, you can't drink words.
