    thoughts, prayers, well wishes plz

My wife survived a very upsetting discovery of breast cancer a year after our second son was born. All you can do is be present for her and be as active as you can in her treatment and recovery. Keep in mind there is a higher power that will dictate the outcome so don't take that all on...

    Sparge until reaches Gravity

Coming back to the topic of the fly sparge, I wanted to put this out there: I recently watched a vid of John Kimmich, from the Alchemist, talk about how he brews Heady Topper. One thing he said that I thought that was remarkable, was that he "never sparges below 5-6 Plato". In SG this is...

    Pre-measured and mixed salts?

Waking a dead thread here because I'm consistently seeing a strange issue balancing the pH of my sparge water, and this issue seems to belong here. Background: I use the Brunwater spreadsheet to great effect balancing my mash - whether it's a lager or a porter - really great. I brew on a...

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Southwestern CT here. Waiting for my rhizomes to be shipped from Farmhouse Supply. This will be my first experience growing hops. Ordered two each of Centennial and Cascade to get started. While shopping at Lowes last weekend for fence repair stuff I found 50' bundles of coir - which I thought...

What I did for beer today

Brewed a BCS Robust Porter. Should fit nicely into the lineup as "the dark beer" since my beautiful Imperial Stout kicked. During the boil the whole brewery smelled like coffee and chocolate. Mmmm

What I did for beer today

Sampled a small bottle of my Bellringer IPA that I had burst carbed using a CarbaCap. Pretty good over all but still very green. Wonderful aroma and flavors but lot's of sharp edges.

    Oskar Blues Recipes

Hey Iceman: This is quoted in terms of how much bitterness in IBUs will be provided by the hops addition. If you are using brewing software (like BeerSmith) , you can very likely just list 1oz of each hop varietal in each time slot, and then use a function to adjust for IBUs. Anyway, that's...

What I did for beer today

Tested an APA that is done fermenting at 20 days in. Whoa - down to 1.007 - a bit too low but still tasted pretty good - dry but not too dry. Started the cold crash on that. Then peeked into the ferm fridge I have outdoors taking care of an IPA I brewed last weekend. I've got a heatpad wired...

    Driveway trench floor drain

So I didn't do the work myself, but for damned sure I was there when the guys did it. I looked back and couldn't find any photos of the work in progress, but I do recall in detail what it entailed, and ultimately, it wasn't really that complicated. My basement floor was laid in 1941 and is a...

What I did for beer today

I'm out of town, so I facetimed my son, had him walk downstairs and show me the IPA bubbling happily away in the fermenter. Ah, that's better.

    Driveway trench floor drain

Raising this thread from the dead - it's on my topic and I didn't see starting a brand new one since there was some good insight here. This post is entitled, "What Trench Drains in the Home Brewery Are For" Having said that. this is not about outside trench drains, this is about in-the-brewery...

    Early Morning Brews

Lit the fires at the crack of 8:15 today. Out late last night so this will have to pass for early morning. Had prepped water and ground grains the night before. Third time brewing this BCS American IPA. Hit the mash temp perfectly. Now into a 90 minute mash.

What I did for beer today

Here on day 12 of fermentation for my APA, started a temperature ramp down to 60F. Will leave it there for two days to get some flocculation, and then harvest thru the dump valve for the brew I'm doing on Sunday.

What I did for beer today

5 minutes left in the boil for 10g of my American Pale Ale. Rebuilding the pipeline after a rapacious holiday season.
