Drinking my first all grain batch

Actually, the first two AG batches I made were brewed just about when summer really hit. I didn't realize high ferment temps would make it taste nasty, so the first batches were rank. Much, much worse than any extract batch I'd made previously. My kids use to tease me because I'd take a...

    Good for a laugh.

Oooh! Same thing happened to me. First time, I had the outlet hose kinked, and the hose leading to the chiller blew. Water everywhere, and I couldn't just reconnect it. Had to cut it off, bolt to the hardware store to get a clamp, then reconnect. Second time, the outlet hose came off...

Are initial S.G. #'s usually lower than post boil #'s

You're right. Boil off increases the SG. I don't have a ton of experience yet, but I generally see about 10+ points increase. For example, I brewed an ESB Friday, pre-boil SG was 1.044, after boil OG was 1.055. That seems to be the norm.

    Wet hop ale - suggestions?

I talked to the folks at our LHBS, and they agree with the 5:1 ratio. Good to get confirmation here, though. The IPA recipe came with my Great American Beer Fest tickets. If you're not going and don't have tickets, you're not allowed to brew this one. Sorry. :( Actually, 'Hoppiness...

    Wet hop ale - suggestions?

I'm pretty pleased and surprised by how well my first year Cascade and Chinook plants did. I've got probably 30 Chinook cones and well over 100 on my Cascades. Two rhizomes each. I'm thinking about making a harvest IPA with them. I was figuring I'd use the 'Hoppiness is an IPA' base recipe...

    Calming down the Hops

I have an ESB I brew about every two months. One of my favorites. In my notes the first and second time I brewed go something like "...bitter! Pucker your a** bitter! Man I sure hope this mellows out!" This was when I tasted my hydro sample. Last time I served it was when we had a little...

    What am I tasting?

Here's one I've had lots of experience with lately. I'm guessing that the taste is fusel alcohol. I was regularly fermenting at about 75 (using WL Calif. Ale), and thought what I was tasting was extract twang. It wasn't. I went to all-grain and it actually got worse. Coincidentally...

Highly anticipated ......... yet utterly disappointing beers.

Hey yeast - I agree with Revvy. Taste is too subjective. You'll get tons of suggestions from folks here, but it really boils down to what you like. Having said that, here's MY suggestions. First, go to Tipsy's out on C470 & Bowles. They have a cooler full of singles you can mix...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2009?

    Catching up - Brewed 5 gals of Randy Mosher's Bambi's Best Blonde 4 weeks ago, plus 10 gals of BM's OktoberFast on Saturday. 18817.7 + 15 = 18,832.7

I am a Homebrewer [video] Release

Too great for words! I thought I was stupid for getting teary-eyed at the end. Then read the other comments from other guys doing the same. It's great to see the coverage all over the 'net. Good job guys.

    Cold conditioning bottles

Thanks to the advice on this board, I now try to keep ready-to-drink bottles in the fridge for a week or two to let the chill haze proteins settle out. I end up with a crystal clear beer if I can keep my hands off long enough! It's a beautiful sight. The question I have is - If I cold...

    I couldn't help myself

I just finished off my last ready bottle of BM's Centennial Blonde. Pining for it already. Luckily, I have a fresh batch I bottled last week. Two more weeks of waiting! Anybody want to take bets whether I'll make those two weeks?

    Taste when bottling

I've never tasted mead, but everyone said it was heaven in a bottle so I thought I'd make a 1 gallon experiment to see how it turned out. After mixing with hot water, I fermented the must for about three weeks, then moved it to a secondary for 3 months. Last night I bottled with a little bit...

    US Expectations of Beer

It's funny, I got into homebrewing so I could control the hop and malt presence to my liking. I never really loved the super-hoppy microbrews here in the states, but loved the malty session beers of the UK. I've come to like some real hoppy beers lately. Had a Russian River Pliny the Elder...

    Fermenting too warm

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to taste the Centennial Blonde and dry hop if it's got the diacetyl taste. I over-hopped it last time (oops) and it turned out great, so dry hopping would probably be pretty good. I'm also looking at buying a mini fridge for lagers and cooler ale...

Also: MAKE SURE YOU USE ALL CAPS BECAUSE PEOPLE REALLY LIKE TO READ YOUR ALL-CAPS POSTS AND IT'S BETTER FOR EMPHASIS. This was hilarious. You guys really gotta stop. It's hard to pretend to be working when I'm laughing.

Has anyone ever melted a better bottle?

I cleaned my BB Tuesday night by filling it with hot water 1/4 way up, some PBW, then sealing the opening and turning it over. Last night, when I got home, the sides were all caved in. When I opened the seal, and poured the water out, it returned to (almost) normal. I'm not terribly...

    Fermenting too warm

This is a little bit rant, with a couple questions thrown in for good measure. The rant: I've been brewing now since last November. Just did my 14th batch (2nd AG) so I've got a few under my belt. Some actually turned out pretty good - friends have told me - "Dude, this is better than...
