Gotta Be A Better Way of Getting DME Into a Flask...

I do the same thing, but don't cool first. Pyrex can handle the change in temperature, and the hot wort sterilizes the flask. I put a piece of foil over the top, cool, pitch, then pop it on my stirplate for a couple days.

    Confusion with my homebrew

+1 on everything McKBrew said. It's your first brew. You'll be anxious as hell to try it. 10 days fermenting, 10 days in the bottle is fine. It won't taste great, but it won't taste bad either. I did exactly this for my first brew. Served it to my family at Christmas. They loved it - my...

    Different temps in converted cooler

That make sense. But - I mash at about 1-1/2 qts / lb. Seems pretty soupy to me.

    Different temps in converted cooler

I vote for stirring. I've been stirring just enough to get things mixed up well, but nothing after (until last weekend). I'll stir more and see if that fixes it. Glad to hear I'm not alone.

    Green Chile beer

+1 to freshly roasted. I roast just before I add to the secondary. I think the smoky, sweet flavor dissipates quickly, especially if refrigerated. +1 to not too hot. I'm a major chili-head, but not in beer. Just enough to have a little bite. Any more, and it's not beer, it's salsa. I...

    Terrible Rash, Beer the Cause?

Okay, dontman, you're really starting to tick me off! How am I supposed to pretend to be working when I'm laughing my a** off! That was hilarious. Now - cut it out, can't you see I'm workin' here?

    Different temps in converted cooler

I have a Coleman cooler (not the Xtreme - just a 48 Qt. Chest cooler) that I converted to a MLT. I now have 6 AG batches under my belt and am beginning to get more comfortable with the process. The previous batches, I found a decent spot for my thermometer's probe so it wouldn't get wet...

    Terrible Rash, Beer the Cause?

My wife makes me watch Grey's Anatomy with her. Do I lose my Man card?

    Green Chile beer

+1 I do a chile ale with 4 habaneros the last 10 minutes of the boil (5 gallon batch), then 2 Poblanos roasted & peeled in the secondary (no need to sterilize). It's fantastic, not too hot, as my non-chili-head friends attest, and has great chile flavor. But - I'm going to up that to three...

    2009 GABF, September 24-26

I'll be there at the Saturday Members-Only session. First time to the GABF, I'd love to meet some folks from here and get some pointers.

60 degree water for carboy cooler and ale?

+1 on the thermowell. I use something like this: Digital Temperature Controller - Fermentation Temperature Control - Fermenting Equipment - Equipment Measures the temperature of the wort, not the air. Only problem is it drops the temperature of the wort a few degrees low until...

    Anyone else here HATE Weiss

Hate 'em. So totally burned out on Wheat beers, weizens, wits. I used to drink Blue Moon quite a bit, then found ShockTop, and drank a boat load saving bottles for my homebrewing debut. Suddenly, I hate wits, wheats, etc. Could it have anything to do with all the wits I drank? Or maybe...

    Forgot to take Gravity Readings...

It's ruined! Send it to me, and I'll dispose of it properly. :drunk: You can estimate what the OG should be pretty easily. I like this website: TastyBrew.com | Recipe Calculation. If it's off a little from what your actual OG was, it won't matter. The FG will be when it stays at the...

60 degree water for carboy cooler and ale?

I've got a BB in my fermentation fridge right now at 68F fermenting with washed WLP001. I learned my lesson from Yooper earlier this year, and now do anything she says! The water temp and your inside BB temp should be really close. Water buffers temperature really well. Water will...

60 degree water for carboy cooler and ale?

That seems a little low to me unless you're doing a lager. For ales, I ferment at about 65 - 68F. The more experienced folks on here will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the temperature of your water bath (as long as it covers enough of your carboy - 1/2 to 2/3) should be pretty close to...

    Brewing with wild hops

It's amazing. It seems everywhere I look I see wild hops growing alongside the road. Maybe it's because I now know what they look like! I'm an avid runner, and love to run on dirt trails and roads. Just yesterday, I saw two different wild hop bushes loaded with huge cones. I picked a...
