Paging cacao nib, coconut, and vanilla bean experts

I’m not an expert but I often make a 2.5 G chocolate stout. The first time I made it I used 2oz nibs and it came out great. But I decided I wanted more chocolate and upped the nibs to 4oz. I did get more chocolate flavor, but it seemed to override the other roasty stout flavors. I decided to...

Bourbon advice for Oak Cube soaking

+1 to Knob Creek. I haven’t used it to soak oak cubes, but it is a really nice bourbon.

First Time Growing Hops - Is This Plan Okay?

I have seen pictures of people growing them along a fence. Sounds like it takes some training of the bines to make it happen, which can be done but you have to keep at it. I find with the obelisk, once they reach the top the bines just start growing on each other. So something similar could...

First Time Growing Hops - Is This Plan Okay?

@SamInNJ I just put one plant per obelisk. Started with 2 obelisks. One for goldings which didn't do much. One for cascade which grows like crazy and can completely cover the obelisk. I wind twine diagonally around it. I wanted something low profile in my garden area. Here are a couple photos.

First Time Growing Hops - Is This Plan Okay?

I do something very similar with this 8ft obelisk https://www.plowhearth.com/p/1497097 Gardners Supply has a similar one too. I do wind twine around mine for the bines to climb and they can end up covering the whole thing. It makes up somewhat for the lack of height. I’ll try to post a photo.

    Using cocoa nibs

@Jag75 do you add just the liquid or the nibs and vanilla beans too? Also, is that amount for a 5G batch?

    One Gallon Kegging

I also use the 1.75 gallon kegs from homebrewing.org for my 1G batches along with their 3 gallon ones for my 2.5G batches. I like them and can stack a 1.75 on top of a 3, making it possible to fit up to 8 in my extra refrigerator.

    Tangerine peel addition

As said above, you’ll likely get various opinions. If it were me, I’d soak them in a little vodka and put them and the vodka in the fermenter. The vodka may help draw some of the flavor out of the tangerine. This is the method I use to add cocoa nibs to my chocolate stout.

    Winterizing young plants

In order to move them to the garage/shed, would you have to dig them up and put in pots, or are they already in pots?

Another Pumpkin Beer ( Hello Gourd-geous)

Highly recommend adding rice hulls to the grain bill. I add roasted canned pumpkin to the mash (biab) and the one time I skipped the rice the bag wouldn’t drain because the pumpkin clogged things up.

Robust Porter - chocolate syrup in primary, how much to use?

With the hop sock I can suspend them in the middle, and it keeps the nibs from clogging up my auto siphon. Also, I think the cocoa powder adds to the flavor. Over time I’ve increased the amount of that and the nibs to up the chocolate flavor. I noticed your grain bill is kind of similar to my...

Robust Porter - chocolate syrup in primary, how much to use?

I use cocoa nibs soaked in vodka for my chocolate stout, added to primary after vigorous fermentation subsides. Rather than throw them in loose, I put them in hop socks weighted with glass beads, tied with unflavored dental floss. I also add 4.5oz Hershey’s Unsweetened coca powder to the boil...

    Mash in kettle or cooler?

I BIAB on my kitchen stove and cover my 4G kettle with an old blanket and 2 thick beach towels. The kettle stays on the stove (with the heat off) and I lose about 2 degrees over the course of an hour. So maybe more layers would help your situation.

    first time biab

+1 to 2.5 gallon batches. I do full volume no sparge 2.5G batches in a 4G kettle, works out great. The simplicity of no sparge is nice too.

    Rosemary Ale

+1 to starting small. It is strong stuff. In my early brewing days I made a pale ale from an extract kit and decided to add fresh rosemary from my garden. It really took over and instead of drinking it my husband ended up using it in cooking stews and short ribs. But a very small amount could...

Adding pumpkin puree to boil - do I need to filter before primary?

I add the pumpkin to the mash and find including rice hulls in the grain bill will eliminate the biab draining problem. The one time I left them out I got the clogged water balloon situation.
