How much flat beer have you drank?

I bottled my IPA this morning. I had a few sips of the flat beer but I'm not one for drinking before noon. Either way, the beer tasted kind of off and I figured it needed a few weeks in a bottle.

Anyone here ever do the whole process...from farm to brew?

Wow... this is intense. I've thought about this sort of thing. I think I'd stop at growing my own hops. My first question is: do you have a green thumb or experience in farming?

will bottles at 60 deg ever carbonate?

I'm glad to read this. My Fermentor's thermometer won't go above 62. I'll try my best to leave it in the primary for 3-4 weeks before I bottle it. My bottles are in a closet nearby and it's a similar situation. I feel like the closet might actually be in the 50s. I've had a few of my first brew...

    Selling beer in New Jersey

Interesting... it makes sense though. Not to get too political, but our government does need to collect tax money somehow. I think luxuries like tobacco and alcohol are fair game to tax. I'd rather pay lower taxes on my income and higher taxes on my luxuries like beer and cable TV. In the end...

Can I cool my wort with ice?

I can see this is a slightly older post, however... My plan was to take spring water and put it in ziplock bags to prevent contamination. Freeze roughly a gallon of it and then use that to cool down my wort. That is, I'll put 2-3 gallons of hot wort in a fermenter with a gallon of ice and then...

    trying to enjoy wheat beers

Yeah. There isn't anything wrong with not liking a certain beer. As I have said before, I'm not a fan of stouts or porters. Though I've picked up quite a few Black and Tans in these past few months. Maybe I'm slowly working a nice, smooth stout. A lot of beers are seasonal and compliment...

1st brew: All extract or Kit w/grains?

I've never done all grain, but I've spoken to a guy that used to compete in beer making competitions. He recommended mixing extract and all grain, since it's a lot easier and the product comes out significantly better than an extract brew. I'd like to eventually move on to AG, but at this...

Is a war chiller better than a sink of ice and salt water?

Damn... I haven't been cooling my wort. I usually just make sure the water I am mixing with my wort is cold. I'll be sure to cool it down in the sink this time around.

    Are you all alcoholics?

Alcoholism is a very difficult concept to get your mind around. I currently work at a psychiatric treatment facility where I work with dually-diagnosed young adults. I've also spent time at a Homeless Outreach and a Juvenile Drug Treatment Program. I by no means consider myself an expert, but I...

Alternative Bottle Openers... what do you use?

Two stories: (1) I was staying in a hotel with my girlfriend in Groton, CT and forgot to get a bottle opener. I used a towel rack in the bathroom and on the second try I pulled the rack out of the wall. We drove to a Home Depot and bought a gizmo to fix it. Luckily we were able to fix it and...

Have I turned into a HopHead?

I don't know when it happened to me, but I really enjoy a mild IPA. I love a good bite of hops but, for me, there is a limit. Maybe I need to try the 90 minute IPA again to confirm this. I think Saranac's Indian Pale Ale is excellent, along with the various Magic Hat IPAs. Brooklyn Brewery's...

Good article on the declining sales of BMC..

I do agree about the Heineken post. I took a tour of the factory back in college and I remember the beer tasting significantly better. In addition, Pilsner Urquel had a better flavor. Most European beers just taste better over there. I'm assuming they're a lot fresher. I am curious of what they...

Looking for Affordable Kits To Hone Skills

On Austin Home Brewer's website they sell individual fermenters and carboys. I'm saving up so I can get 2-3 more fermenters to get my pipeline rolling. I spoken to some people that tell me you can get food grade buckets for half the price if you go straight to a distributor. Though, I'm not...

Good article on the declining sales of BMC..

That doesn't surprise me at all. I think it's cool that more money is being funneled to smaller, privately owned companies. I noticed 3-4 years ago that major beer companies were making their "microbrewed beer". I.E. Blue Moon (Coors) and Anheiser-Busch released a line of beers with cheesy...

    Primary vs. Secondary

oh, sorry about that. I figured it was a commonly discussed topic. I will peak around a bit

    Primary vs. Secondary

i am considering an order with ahs and i want to get either a second primary fermenter or a secondary fermenter. What are the advantages of transfering my wort to a secondary? in this situation, would you recommend buying a secondary or another primary to add to my pipeline...

    Austin brewing

I just used to Yeast Fuel in my Promotional British IPA. I finished the beer around 6 PM and when I got back to my apartment at midnight, my airlock was already bubbling. So it was bubbling in less than six hours. Basically, as I understand it really does speed up the fermenting process...

I think I burned my wort

Yeah.. I burned my British IPA today. I was so damn excited. I had my kitchen ready and I was waiting for UPS to deliver the mix. I made a few mistakes along the way. I had the black floaties too. Hopefully it won't scorch the brew. Also, I overfilled the pot. I had a standard 1.5 gallon pot...

    New Brewers.....listen....

On one of Revvy's posts he had a video of a guy that was opening bottles of home brewed beer every few days to demonstrate the process of carbonation. He recommended that you open a beer every week to see how your beer ages. That's my excuse to open my first bottle of home brew tonight. It's...

    Mistake (dropped the airlock gasket)

I had the same situation with my first brew. I stuck my hand in the brew and fished it out in like 3 seconds. Let's hope nothing bad happens. It doesn't seem too bad thus far.
