Brew Masters on Discovery w/ Sam Calagione

Yeah, I have to agree. I've seen the first two episodes and I felt like it dragged and dragged. Though I did enjoy the chance to see the day-to-day operations of a commercial brewery. As a partial mash/extract brewery this concept of "all-grain" is a little scary. It was interesting to see...

    Tröegs Dreamweaver Clone?

I'm a big fan of Troegs in general. Every single beer I've tried from them has been a pleasant surprise. Has anyone tried to harvest the wheat from the Dreamweaver bottle? How did it turn out?

    Butterscotch off-flavor. What next?

Sorry, I didn't explain that these were three different beers. I have three 5-gallon batches of each beer. I don't think I'm quite advanced enough to mix yeasts. I essentially have 150 bottles of beer with some serious off-flavors. Hence why I posted this. I like your explanation...

    Butterscotch off-flavor. What next?

hm... I appreciate your support Revvy(and everyone else)... I've made a few batches and some of them were quite good. I'm sure that these beers will be drinkable by the holidays. I used a harvested Irish 1084 for an Imperial Irish, American 1056 for an Amber Ale and 3068 for a Dunkelweizen...

    Butterscotch off-flavor. What next?

Alright... here's the deal. I became a little impulsive and I decided to brew beer in my apartment while the temperature outside was still a little warm. I kept the air conditioner on fairly consistently but the temp did peak at 75, maybe even 80 degrees. After 3-4 weeks in the bottle the...

Help me come up with my 50th Birthday (or my Memorial) 5 year aged Barleywine recipe.

Wow... I grew up in Lapeer County (it's a county or two adjacent to you Revvy). I live Connecticut now, but after looking at the pictures it really made me want to make an impromptu visit to my family. Oh, and I would have been another helping hand at your brewfest. Either way, best of luck...

How hot can liquid yeast survive?

i'm headed out of town this weekend and i'm leaving when i get off work tonight at 5. i received my order wednesday and immediately brewed my bavarian dunkelweizen from AHS. Right now it feels like this entire country is experiencing a heat wave and my box was delivered to me feeling a bit...

    Homebrew and Customs...

I went through Customs at Niagara Falls and Sarnia/Port Huron, Michigan. They never asked me if I wanted to claim any alcohol, I just told them I was going through for my brother's wedding. I was never given any issues. I did, however, pack them in the back of my trunk and in 12-pack...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

I have a B.S. in Sociology: Concentration in Social and Criminal Justice. Right now I work at a residential facility for people with mental illness. However... during my stint in the U.S. Navy I was training to be an Electrician and I did fairly well until things went sour.:mug: So, I...

What has two thumbs and is going pro?

i'll be pretty honest. i always experience (as any homebrewer experiences) the "you should open a microbrewery" conversation whenever we enjoy my beer. i always respond with "i really enjoy brewing beer, i really don't want to ruin my hobby by doing it as a job" either way, i wish you guys the...

    Want to try a Barleywine

I'm always a fan of Brooklyn Brewery's beers. Their Barleywine is quite good. I know it's available around me in Connecticut. I'm sure you could locate it in PA.

    IPA's... what's the draw?

i find this post to be so funny. i think i'm the kind of guy that likes "extreme" foods. i don't think there is a single style of beer i can't enjoy in the right situation. there's nothing better than a nice winter warmer beer in the middle of january or a light hefe in the middle of july...

Lets not let this happen here!

I read on other articles that this trend has cost the country 15,000 jobs. What a shame. It also said in an article that it's becoming less socially acceptable to frequent pubs more than a few times a week. I've also read about how many of the Irish pubs in NYC have gone away. Many of the...

    Beer in Amsterdam

While Amstel is a major brand in the Netherlands, I would recommend that you pick up the Amstel Dark. I've only managed to get it once, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Discuss: what kind of wine do you like ?

I enjoy a nice Shiraz. In addition, Blackstone Cabernet has always treated me well. In essence, I enjoy a dry red. Also, if I'm going to drink a white wine, I'll go for an Austrian or German white. As a random recommendation, if anyone lives on the east coast I would absolutely recommend a...

    Brewing when you're broke . . .

Maybe you could give buying malt in bulk a try? Harvest some of your own yeast and then get some hops in bulk. If you're looking to do it cheaply and don't care too much about what you're making, you could probably get the price down to like 25 cents a bottle.

How to do a Strawberry Blonde?

Alright.. So my Strawberry Blonde has been bottled for 13 days. It's quite good. If I were to do it again I'd probably only throw in 20 ounces of strawberries. The flavor is quite strong. I would recommend anyone to make a similar beverage. I'm considering a fermentation with pineapple.

    my brother went to austria....

I lived in Austria during college in the winter of 2005. I've always said that Austria is very much an under-appreciated wine and beer country. Austria's Lagers are quite amazing also. My personal favorite beers were Die Weisse, Ottakringer, and Weiselburger. Oh the good memories.
